Spawned from this thread: http://whitewomenblackmen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16954 Several of the teachers I've worked with and seen at HCC can be deemed "Obese". http://www.patientsmedical.com/men/maleobesity/default.aspx
Well, you didn't spell the word "stupidity" right, so are you sure you still know what you're talking about?
Obesity is obesity, I would've recommend seeing if we could merge the topic into one gigantic thread because to be honest, it needs the attention it gets. We are the fattest country in the world, that's not a good thing, and putting our heads in the sand isn't going to fix it.
I for one is just worn down by the subject. We all know the risks and costs.. By talking about it once per week is not going to change anything. But I will say this: Fact - there are more overweight men than women in this country. Fact, we are all more or less driven by aesthetics.. Women may be more prone to over look weight as we are more prone to look for other things, but of course you have a point that women are driven by looks as well - nobody is denying that. I just think that as I said, I just think men are more so, to a degree. Biologically, it even makes sense - but given that, Biology is not the prime ruler of us. Sometimes the brain has to kick in and say - "no, wait - been here done that - it aint working" I learned that lesson a very long time ago. In the end, most of us, with any common sense will be drawn in by looks but that will not make us stay, if there is nothing else there... I think that goes for both women and men. If you want to discuss the health aspects and cost etc - I'm out cuz its been done and we all know it. I'm not gonna berate overweight men, because, I assume they know and they heard it to death. I have a highshool friend who just had gastric bypass surgery in Sweden... not a country where this is very common and the understanding and support is NIL. He knew exactly what he did wrong, that wasn't the issue but that was also the only help he got for a decade - advice on how to eat. How do you change 40 years of habits??? Education is not enough at that point, I get that. He knew full well. Anywhooo - he got the gastric bypass, which he is using as keeping himself accountable, and he is doing fantastic. Yes, many of us say, why just not do it? Well, I figure we dont know the answer to that unless we have been there, much like depression or alcoholism, we cant say what is the driver. It has been proven that junk food is addictive and turns on areas of the brain much like gambling etc so I think this isn't just an easy fix. If you are using eating as a crutch, which is very common, and you don't even know what triggers it, how u gonna stop? You first have to figure out what is the issue. Etc. I hate passing judgement on things I have not experienced, so I just don't do it. Overweightness is complex and there are so many different reasons for it.. socioeconomic reasons, emotional reasons, etc bla bla. Man, that was a looong reply for an intended one liner - ooopsss... HAHAHA
:smt023 Why not offer some solutions then instead of just mentioning the problem? We already have some fitness threads but they are more suitable for the advanced athletes. What about a thread for the beginners who might need some pointers and motivation from people who are experienced? We could talk about how to boost your metabolism or how changing your diet can have a positive effect on your everyday life. Im a Vegetarian and I have never been into fast food. It's sad too see so many teenagers with huge bellies that spend their time only at Mc Donald's or Burger King to hang out while they get bigger and bigger. Yet I would NEVER pick on them. I feel sorry for them because their parents failed to do their job. They will have to face a very unhealthy life with all kind of health risks just because they dont know better. All the negativity helps nobody. Give some support instead. At times I am too lazy and tired to hit the gym after work and then I am grateful when my mom joins me which makes it more fun (since Jay cant be there all the time *sigh*). A lot of people dont have that support. So if you see/know people that might need that little extra encouragement, reach out and be a supporter.
We are in fact making some interesting strides with combating general obesity in my area. Check this out. http://www.explorehoward.com/news/80521/new-name-new-plans-revealed-laurel-mall/
Wow, when there was a "female obesity" thread everybody had to put his 2cent in it...... I see that not a lot of people have something positive to contribute. You know what they say: If you are not part of the solution, You are part of the problem
Too bad insurance companies don't give better incentives to work out and eat better like subsidizing fruits and vegetables and making them more affordable than junk. Or how about subsidizing your gym membership or other fitness classes. Like having insurance should mean that your gym membership can be paid for through insurance not reimburaced at the end of the year. Nysc is 84 dollars a month, having insurance should mean cutting it 40 a month and a four hundred dollar reimburacement at the end of the year. Everybody wins.
