Yup, you must be very young to think that. MJ and Nirvana were simply amazing. Most overrated for me are.... Lady Gaga Britney Spears Justin Bieber The Black Eyed Peas Flo Rida Ke$ha Rihanna Good Charlotte Pussycat dolls There are more, but that's all I could think of.
I agree with all except Lady Gaga, she might not be a great singer but she is a good show person and got a little artistic bone in her. Beware, Nico the white dude will cry foul, lol.
:smt021 Nirvana had one great album and 2 that were below average. They didn't have the best song or album of the 90's, and they weren't the best act of their decade. Rolling Stone Magazine placed them infront of Elton John, Neil Young, Prince, and Radiohead which is extremely laughable. So I'd say yes, they are overrated.
Well, the question in of itself is many times posed by younger people who often slight the giants of a bygone era. They often don't understand the adulation of a particular artists and judge that along with the actual art. Which is hard to dissociate, but the rating of any artists should be a critical analysis, never popularity. I've become hesitant as I've gotten older not to engage in "overrated" rhetoric, and usually will say an artist is underrated. MJ and Nirvana, imo, are as great as they are made out to be.
I think all three Nirvana albums are great. I don't see why a strong argument can't made for them in this case. RS is trash for the most part anyway, but Nirvana are one of the Giants of pop music, imo and belong high on some lists.
I only judge by music. It just seems to me that a huge chunk of M.J.'s praise come from things other then his music. I don't care how good someone can moonwalk, I wanna see what they can do in a studio. He made good music but IMO he can't hang with the best of the best. Half of it is that I think Nirvana and M.J. are overrated, the other half is that I think some artist that are better then them get overlooked.
IMO Radiohead flat out makes Nirvana look silly in terms of 90's music. The combination of The Bends and Ok Computer are miles ahead of what Nirvana did.
MJ is the crème de la crème, dude was a legend before he ever did the backslide on tv, you gotta stack some heavyhitters to even approach the man. Well, that's what it means to be overrated. One can still like an artist and think they are overrated. Who do you think are better than MJ and Nirvana, respectively?
Nevermind/In Utero The Bends/Ok Computer Well, that's a tough one for me. All four albums are great. At the time they came out In Utero got the most spins from me, now I listen to The Bends the most out of the four. But, Nirvana and Radiohead make different music, so they can't be compared genre wise (which you are not doing) but overall. Impact wise - Nevermind, Ok Computer, In Utero, The Bends Though the Bends is better imo than In Utero, certainly as a complete album and considering the song writing, but The Bends got caught up in the What's The Story Morning Glory comparisons and got overshadowed. By the time Ok Computer came out, Nirvana had already solidified its place in the consciousness of the 90's music scene. Out of those four albums, OK Computer is my least favorite, but I would say those two Radiohead albums edge out Nirvana. Throw Pablo Honey in there and you severely weaken you case, especially since Bleach is a fucking awesome album, imo.
Nevermind got the most listens from me because of how pop it was. It's a crazy analogy..... I feel like Nirvana was that kid who was naturally smart and didn't study yet got A's. While Radiohead was the natural smart kid who spent most of their time studying and was in all honors. :smt102 Nirvana was real good in grunge and stuff that people before them had done. While Radiohead went off into their own land and created their own rules. Coming out of Nevermind I was thinking "man those were some pretty good songs", but coming out of OK Computer I was thinking "WTF was that". Songs like Paranoid Android sounded like nothing people had heard before. If Kid A had been released a few months earlier, there wouldn't even be a discussion between these 2 bands in terms of 90s.
Good assessment. I enjoy the pop sensibilities and song writing of the bends over (what I feel is) the rather cold/technical genius of OK Computer, which as a sonic landscape is amazing, but folks like Eno and Pink Floyd were doing stuff with similar intentions.
Not a fan of that one either. Piper At The Gates.. and The Wall are my faves. I can only imagine what that london scene must have been like with Jimi and Pink Floyd in 67/68.
