Crystal Renn deserves major props for putting plus-size models front and center in recent years. The 24-year-old has walked the runway for big designers like Chanel and Jean-Paul Gaultier and has appeared in ad campaigns for a variety brands like H&M, Dolce & Gabbana, and Jimmy Choo as well as plus-size retailers like Lane Bryant and Torrid. She's also posed for the biggest fashion magazines on the planet. But spectators are finding fault with her because they fear she's losing weight and caving to media and industry demands to stay thin. This might be the case. But Renn also feels extreme pressure to maintain her plus-size model status, which isn't easy since she now clocks in at a size six/eight with a 37-38 inch hip. The modeling industry generally considers size 10 and up to be plus-size. (Unbelievable, we know.)

In a great new video interview with Ford models, Renn explains why her figure has changed so much over the years, and why perhaps it shouldn't matter. "A lot of people wanted to point their finger at somebody. They wanted to find a conspiracy when there actually was none," she says in the interview. "I feel pressure probably more than any place from the public and the media. I think by placing a title on my head—which is plus-size—and then the picture that these people have created in their mind about what plus-size actually is, I basically fail you just with that, because I couldn’t possibly live up to that."

Renn has openly discussed her weight battles and eating disorders in the past, and says she has to swear off labeling herself to avoid another relapse. "I had anorexia ultimately because someone else set the standard for me and I wanted to follow it. And if I followed what the public wanted from me or what the media wants from me I would be doing the same thing—I would have a binge eating disorder."

We think it's unfair that Renn should have so much pressure on her to be the face of plus-size women, because as we all know, weight can fluctuate. Fit models who generally wear a size two or four often struggle with maintaining their size, or develop eating disorders and unreasonable body images. If we wish the fashion industry would widen the gap on different sizes of women showing off clothing, and their bodies, why should we require Crystal Renn to maintain a larger size if that's not what her body is gravitating towards right now?

While initially we worried that Renn was succumbing to the stereotype of a model not eating and losing weight at all costs, Renn says she is healthier now and has taken up hiking and other forms of exercise. As Renn says, "You cannot tell if someone’s healthy, where they are mentally, from what’s going on on the outside, because health is different for everybody at different sizes." As women, we can only imagine how horrible it must to have your weight and body shape scrutinized as part of your job. So perhaps we should stop monitoring her size, or the size of other models, and just be happy to see some variety in the modeling world.

how do you handle the pressure people try to impose on you ?

also what do you think of Ms. Renn as far as her looks(weight) ?

what do you think of her attitude ?

what would you say to her or ask her if you was next to her ?

She still looks very good. She's pretty. She's thick...not fat. A man should want some meat of his bone. If a woman has a nice waistline with a C or D cup and a rounded derierre to booth and weigh less than 200 rather than more than 200, she is considered to be thick. Below is an example of fat and even they have no problem getting a BM if he likes a lot of meat on his bone.

Not America, but the system within America which is ran by white men. Sorry to have to say that but it's true. I have a lot of black women friends. To me, they have the most beautiful built sexy bodies in the world. Their butts are plump and rounded are not flat like ours tend to be. They have small waistlines in proportion to their body weight with a C or D cup and a swag out of this world. I wish to God I had a body like theirs. But according to the system set by white men, my friends are overweight just because they are thick. But they are not depressed about what the system says because they know that they got it going on.

Black Women Happier With, Less Likely To Change Body Than White Women [REPORT] Written by Hello Beautiful Staff on February 16, 2011 11:00 am

View PhotosFor the March 2011 issue of Allure magazine, also their 20th anniversary issue, they conducted a beauty survey of 2,000 women and men to find out if the average American’s beauty perceptions and preferences have changed over the past two decades.

Among their finds? Black women are happier with their bodies than white women, but are less likely to diet. READ ON!

    Beauty Preferences
    - 64% think women of mixed race represent the epitome of beauty.
    - 70% of those who wish to change their skin color wanted it to be darker – this was pronounced among women.
    - 74% of those surveyed believe that a curvier body type is more appealing now than it has been over the past ten years.
    - 69% of survey respondents believe there is no such thing as an “all-American look.”
    - 85% of those surveyed believe that increased diversity in this country has changed what people consider beautiful.

    Racial Differences
    - African-American and Hispanic women are twice as likely as Caucasian women to report not wanting to change their body in any way.
    - African-American and Hispanic women are more likely than Caucasian women to feel they’re more attractive than their significant other.
    - A third of African-American women think of themselves as the most attractive person in the room.
    - African-American and Hispanic men are nearly twice as likely as Caucasian men to say the butt is among the most attractive features of a woman.
    - African-American men are directionally more likely to embrace and aspire to curviness – they say they want curvier hips and a higher/rounder butt or a larger butt.
    - African-American women are least likely to be on a diet/watch their weight.

    The Age Factor
    - The younger the male respondent, the more likely he is to agree with the statement “Cougars are hot.”
    - 86% of everyone surveyed think that middle-aged women of today are perceived as more attractive than they were two decades ago.

    Celebrity Ideals
    - Both men and women include Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Matthew McConaughey, Harrison Ford, and Hugh Jackman in their top picks for most beautiful males.
    - Both men and women include Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Megan Fox, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Jessica Alba in their top picks for most beautiful female.

Definitely, we do. I have never know any black woman to throw up food, but I know several white women who purge on a daily basis. I am sure that there are some black women that have eating disorders, but I don't know of any personally. The black women I know are happy with their beautiful thick bodies and are not listening to what the system says. They figure that that system is fit for white women...not them. I have read statistics that say over 60% of black women are fat. But, a black woman's body built is different from a white woman's. Muscle is heavier than fat and they have more muscle tone than we do. So the statistics don't mean nothing to them. They are like kiss my ass. :smt081 They are so hilarious.

This is exactly I was trying to say in my earlier post. This report could not be further from the truth. Because this is exactly the sentiments of my black girlfriends. They know that a coke bottle build is sexy and beautiful. Sadly though, some black men (not most) are listening to what the system has put in place and beginning to ridicule black women for being fat, but these are mostly the ones who prefer white women anyway. So black women, unlike us white women, are not prone to eating disorders to be appealing to their man, because in the black culture, their men love their bodies.

Why? Because I have black girl friends? Yes, I associate myself with them and more white women should. Do I have to despise black women to be with black men? I don't think so. I grew up in a mixed neighborhood. So therefore, I am more familiar with AA culture...is that a bad thing? I love the AA culture period, not just the men. Some of my girlfriends tease me about being a black woman on the inside. I take that as a compliment. Hope my association with black women doesn't bother you. If it does, just try and act like you don't see my post. Put me on ignore or something.
