I'm sure there are a few who think they're bad asses, but most of those who do are in for a rude awakening. You're exactly right...people that break laws have to deal with the consequences. While some of the things that happen in the prisons are scary, ugly, sad, etc., the reality is they did it to themselves.

Sad but true in many respects. The saddest part to me is that this becomes the reality of life for these guys. Most of them never learn. They can't even fuction in the real world when they do get out, so they keep ending up back in prison. Such a sad waste.

Much of the time it stems from the lack of guidance in their lives.They rely on the wrong things to teach them about life. Most of these guys are raised by single mothers with no positive male role model in sight. Yes, more fathers need to step up & do their damn jobs, BUT more mothers need to quit sending the message to their sons that men are worthless. If you teach a boy that men are worthless, why are you surprised when he grows up to be worthless himself? I've seen this happen too much & it pisses me off.



There comes a point though where we have to figure shit out on our own. Too much of the time folks want to play the victim, & blame their issues on everyone else; thinking that's their escape from responsibility. It is true that we are all a product of our environment, BUT if we are aware enough of what the issues are & where they stem from...we CANNOT use them as an excuse. If we become aware of what the cycle is yet choose not to break it, it's our own damn fault when shit happens because of it.

It would be enough for me too. I think too many of these kids didn't get enough dicipline. As my granny used to say, "There ain't nothing wrong with a good ass-whuppin'."

 

Yeah, it's become an issue over here too. People still do it, but there are a lot of them who get in trouble for doing so. Some folks don't get the difference between spanking & abuse. I definitely believe in spanking, & I spanked my son when necessary; I had my share growing up too & it didn't do me any harm. I do believe that it works when used properly. It's funny...three of my younger brothers got a lot fewer spankings than my other brother & myself & they've had all kinds of problems, including jail and/or prison.

 

In general I honestly don't think these programs have much effect on these kids. There are few that are scared enough to stop being idiots. It's true that raping & being raped is a common occurrence; & there are many who willingly have sex with each other (gross). I think he put it like he did because he was hoping to get through to some of those little fools. There was also one white kid in particular in the group displaying a serious attitude, so I think he was mostly directing it at him. As far as what these guys say to these groups in general, I really don't know. I wasn't typically working in that department; I was just relieving another officer who was on break.

Chill Flaming...I was just repeating what the inmate (who was black) said to these kids. I've seen the politics behind what you're saying & the whites & mexicans definitely have have a common hatred for blacks (just like the black inmates hate them). Mexicans & whites hate each other too, but just like the government they can play nice with others when they have an agenda & a use for each other. Typically though, they tend to keep to themselves. The point I was making was that the fact that they are outnumbered tends to be a pretty strong deterrent for white inmates.

Being outnumbered also seemed to be a huge factor for some in their decision to join racist groups thinking it would give them protection. I also have a couple of stupid younger brothers who've done time & they've had many ass-kickings from mexican & black guys alike. Thankfully they were never stupid enough to join the aryan trash.

Black men deal with the same issues in prison that they do in the free world; there's no denying that, & much of the time it gets worse when they're locked up. The difference I saw was that they tend to stick together better when they're incarcerated than they do when they are free, & they're less inclined to take the shit when it happens.

It's funny...I once worked at a small town minimum security unit with a bunch of small town fools. It doesn't take long in these small towns for everyone to know all your business, so there were things about my personal life my coworkers & bosses did not approve of, so I had to deal with some racist attitudes while working there. It wasn't long before everyone...even the inmates were talking shit & calling me a n-lover & interestingly enough the mexicans called me one more than anyone else did.
