Civil Engineering with a focus on structural elements. I may opt to Engineering Management come grad school instead of just straight structural design.

Good for you....and good Field for the best job prospects when the economy improves again....I am structural ,on my own for a while and will offer this advice.... Get yourself a copy of Autocad or Micro Station and get yourself an old set of construction plans of projects in your specialty....... and then try tirelessly to read and understand everything in the plans.......finally try to reproduce elements of the drawings yourself in Cad.......this exposure and experience will prove to be priceless as you integrate into the industry with internship's or apprenticeships.......Every company is always looking for experience and exposure and you will have given yourself an edge.......

Thanks, but do you know any good sites which sells an AutoCAD program for less than $300? Or a downloadable that's practically free?

I have some programs already which are structural analysis based - one with general trusses, while the other involves steel design.

After reading the Valentines day thread, Im stuck thinking to myself... Why do male holidays suck ass? Girls get the works for their special days... Guys on the other hand are lucky if they get a power tool or something for their special day... If female holidays were a house they would be mansions, if male holidays were a house it would be a flat in the projects lol...

Thanks and yep pretty much. And like my coworker friend (who is salaried) said to me, I can understand them doing that last year because we weren't doing so well, but this year, we've had a great year. It sucks.

    Yep, it does.

Eh, I've thought about finding another job for years now, but really, I have no interest in making a lateral move. I hate the business world and want out. So, I'm just going to stick it out here in hopes that a better opportunity in another field comes along. But thank you for the sentiment. :D

Thanks! I didn't bring it up. Last year, we had another snow day and I got screwed with having to take a vacation day or taking it unpaid, as well. I knew it would happen again this year. Anyway, when I questioned my boss about it last year, he basically went through the whole exempt vs non-exempt status BS:

Exempt Employee: Employees with exempt status are exempt from the protections of the wage and hour laws of their state, or of the Federal government (Fair Labor Standards Act). Examples of exempt employees under Federal law are "executives," "professionals" and full-time students, as defined under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Exempt employees must always be paid on a salary basis, not subject to reduction based on the quality or quantity of work performed.

Non-Exempt: Employees with non-exempt status are generally protected by the wage and hour laws of your state, or of the Federal government (Fair Labor Standards Act). Wage and hour laws require employers to pay at least a certain minimum hourly wage rate and a premium rate for overtime work. They are also a guide for determining which on-the-job hours constitute work, and thus must be compensated.

He said, basically, because the salaried employees can be forced to work overtime without extra pay or weekends without extra pay, they make up the hours that our facility was closed due to the weather.

Oh and my company has an American CEO and a Japanese CEO in America. It's ridiculous. It's the Japanese Corporation's way of keeping an eye on the American facilities, I guess. So, that CEO is here to stay (for now).

Yep! But what are ya gonna do?

    Thanks, TC!!

    I appreciate the support everyone.
