I read through most of these posts and once again let NY school you guys after all we brought hip to the masses. Google it lol.
In my opinion a great rapper can make a hot diss record, a hot club track, and a make you think track. No one has ever come close to achieving that as much as Jay-Z. I think when someone is on top for so long people tend to forget so let me remind you. Sit back and let me educate you guys.

One of the greatest diss records ever.

One of the deepest tracks I've ever heard. I still quote it to this day.

Back in 2001 there wasn't a club or a party where this wasn't bangin

Another deep track for you to ponder about

First Commercially Successful Rock/Rap crossover since Walk This Way and don't get me started on the Collision Album with Linkin Park

You Just Have To Respect This Man's Career

Even if you're not from NY you gotta love this

How many of us can make beautiful music like this with our ladies

I'm gonna end here for now but in my opinion Jay is a true living legend and he's in everyone's top 5 for a reason. You can listen and be thoroughly entertained on so many levels and I seriously can't say that about any other rapper.

I will give Eminem credit for one thing.
He doesn't Exaggerate about a lifestyle filled with cocaine, popping bottles, jewelry, cars, all that material shit. Almost every rapper mentioned has or had lyrical content saturated with that shit.

    Jay-Z created this crap.

For that alone he could never be the best.

He definitely didn't start it he was just smrt enough to brand it and get way richer than any rapper before him. He's an incredibly business saavy. There are business classes formed around what he did. I wish people would stop hating.

The first time I saw eminem I thought it was an SNL skit...I was like "this porky pig sounding mofo is a comedic genius"...then I found out it was real...

    I just don't get it.

Ya'll can have that weak-ass genre or "music"...

    Business savvy=good rapper?

Everything bolded means nothing and has nothing to do with rapping.

Why do you guys even worry about business stuff and "Swag" when it comes to rapping? Can't you guys just listen to the music and not worry about the fake persona these people create?

No an incredible body of work equals great rapper. You don't have to like him but you do have to respect. And I am so fucking sick of people trying to make rappers into news correspondants. These guys are entertainers. Why the fuck are they held accountable for the characters they potray but actors aren't nor other musicians in other genres. Jay z for example is respected by the majority of rappers and not just because of the money but because his lyrical word play is amazing and his story telling is off the charts. He's a true artist. Again just review the youtube examples I put up. Say what you want but he's the truth.

B.e.t had a round table not to long ago and they crowned em as the best so far in the last ten years (I believe it was that time span).

hell the 1st few white rappers that were extremely lyrical and respected was 3rd bass. they were hot. now em got that shit down pack. he is much more creative than most rappers are today. BET got it right. there are more white rappers taking over like yellawolf

I love most of Em's music. Never thought he was very attractive though.

Because the people whos opinions we're giving a damn about, including half the people in this thread do. I know it makes for a good rebuttal but re-read that post and ask yourself if that was the way I explained how I evaluate rappers.

lol @ porky pig sounding.
More often than not, Eminem is not what you'd have turned up in you car but if youre looking at the rymes in the songs when hes not making an ass of himself, you gotta respect it.

id much rather listen to Styles P or a dozen other rappers than Eminem but It just goes back to the question.... What criteria are you using to rank these rappers :smt102

    How stupid is that?

That'd be like me saying Actress A is better then Actress B because she looks better. Or Avatar is the better then Pulp Fiction because it made more.

Also lol at Jay-Z sales, you know how many rappers have had albums that outsold any of Jays?

If you fellas wanna talk sales...
MC Hammer had an album that sold 18 million. Why are we not throwing him into the discussion?

Em is definitely in my top 5. The man is a lyrical assassin who cancels careers. And the one thing I appreciate about him is he always pays homage.
