Melbourne remains No. 3 for livability

    Tim Colebatch

    February 12, 2010
MELBOURNE remains the third most livable city in the world, and just 2.5 percentage points short of perfection, according to the latest rankings by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Ranking 140 global cities on 30 criteria covering stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure, the think tank of The Economist magazine gives Melbourne a score of 97.5 out of a possible 100.
Winter Olympics host Vancouver remains No. 1 , scoring 98.0, despite its unfortunate lack of snow, while Vienna was ranked second with 97.9.

Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, was judged the most unliveable city in the survey, with a total score of just 37.5. Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, tied with Algiers as the second worst, followed by Port Moresby.
Half of the top 10 cities come from lands Down Under. Sydney was seventh, Perth and Adelaide equal eighth and Auckland 10th (96.1).
Canada had three of the top five cities, with Toronto ranked fourth and Calgary fifth.
London was ranked 54th with a score of 88.4. European cities were ranked the most liveable by region but only Vienna and Helsinki (sixth) made the top 10.
The unit highlighted the poor scores of cities hosting upcoming sporting events. Johannesburg, home of the 2010 soccer World Cup, ranked just equal 92nd with a score of 69.1 - the same as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the main hosts for the 2014 World Cup.
New Delhi, host of this year's Commonwealth Games, ranked 113th with a score of 58.6. It was the best of the cities that will host the 2011 cricket World Cup, with Mumbai 117th, Colombo 132nd and Dhaka equal 138th.

Isrealis and Arabs don't fight in America because THEY ARE NOT AT THE BOTTOM in this society.

If Black people left America for 15 minutes this Country would Balkanize faster than you could say Kosovo.

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands who immigrate here each year. I don't see people risking life and limb to go to Melbourne fun bags. Good try though lol.

They figure...and rightfully so...that they can hate themselves into acceptance.

But they are accepted they just appear to be in comparison to us. You can tell how accepting people are by how they react to you dating one their daughters and I don't care how pc people want to pretend to be but let a ww bring a non white male of any race there will be hell to pay. And the same can be said about non white families as well, excluding wm of course.

oh, there are people who risk life and limb to come to australia and her beautiful cities....

Boat people trade 'out of control'

    Tom Allard IN JAKARTA

    April 9, 2010
PEOPLE smuggling is ''totally out of control'', with thousands of asylum seekers jostling to get to Australia, according to the senior representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Indonesia, Manuel Jordao.
The comments come as asylum seekers report the price of a passage to Australia has halved as more human-trafficking syndicates emerge to take advantage of an influx of irregular immigrants.
In an interview with the Herald, Mr Jordao said a ''huge percentage'' of almost 4000 asylum seekers on the UNHCR's books in Indonesia would try to reach Australia by boat rather than wait for resettlement through official channels.
Along with those registered with the UNHCR, there are believed to be thousands more Afghans, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans who bypass the UNHCR as they wait for people smugglers to take them to Australia.
''It's a big business out there,'' said Mr Jordao, who arrived in Indonesia in January. ''It's totally out of control and what we are proposing is that the states in the region are being outmanoeuvred by the trafficking syndicates.''
Mr Jordao said new solutions were required by governments across the region, calling on them to ''get their act together''.
''The problem is growing and it won't go away,'' he said.
In a little over three months this year, 1808 irregular immigrants and 96 crew have made it to Australia by boat, even though it has been monsoon season, a period when the seas are rough and boat crossings slow.
If that rate continues, 2010 will be the biggest year yet for unauthorised arrivals by boat, easily exceeding the 5000 or so who arrived in 2001.
Last year, 2706 asylum seekers and 115 crew made it to Australia, the first full year under the Rudd government's new immigration policies. In 2008, just 127 asylum seekers arrived by boat, along with 15 crew.
More than 90 per cent of asylum seekers still arrive by plane.
Asked if the Rudd government's change in immigration policies was responsible for the influx, Mr Jordao declined to comment, saying it was not his place.
He conceded that finding solutions was difficult but said nations had to show ''the clients of the traffickers'' they had other options and other ''partners''.
Australia takes only a handful of asylum seekers each year from Indonesia through the official UNHCR process.
Instead of waiting many years for placement through the UNHCR, some asylum seekers head to Australia where they are processed within months and guaranteed residency in Australia if found to be genuine refugees.
Asylum seekers interviewed by the Herald said they had a growing number of options to get to Australia and regarded law enforcement efforts in Indonesia as a joke.
The Australian Federal Police co-operates closely with its Indonesian counterparts but has been overwhelmed and outfoxed by people smuggling syndicates. Widespread corruption means many boats pass through Indonesian waters unhindered, while asylum seekers who are detained often escape.
As police efforts foundered, new syndicates were popping up, mainly in Jakarta, asylum seekers said. While established people-trafficking rings are headed by people from the Middle East, the new ones are run by Indonesians and offer lower prices.
''You can now pay $US4000, while before it was between $US8000 and $US10,000,'' said one asylum seeker who has been in Indonesia for two years and asked not to be identified.

    Bosoxlady,

My ex was Spanish, though she lived and worked in Dublin for a few years before returning to Spain. I remember than she was insistent that she didn't want to go to a nightclub with me in Dublin because the local women were out of control, lol. Needless to say, when we visited Dublin we toured the sights but I never took in the night life there.

I'm just curious how open modern Irish women are to dating American black men, not to be confused with the increasing number of African black men all over Europe?

ON a sober note, actually more than 30 people just died when their boat smashed on rocks when they were seeking asylum in Australia.
