We had a situation where a man went on a driving rampage last year shooting people as he went along the country side. Anyway he owned the Gun legally a Shotgun as a handgun is pretty much impossible to own unless its a Pellet gun and even they are restricted now. To own that Shotgun he has to have a license, he has to have good reason to own the gun, be a member of a club (even then its not guranteed, still unlikely to own one) or be a farmer or such for culling. You are not able to own a gun just for the purpose of having one or even to protect yourself. Before you are given a license which can take months, the Police visit your home do a CRB check, the gun may not be left loaded and ammunition has to be stored seperately, Guns have to be in a steel gun case fixed to the floor or wall when not in use as does ammunition. You may only buy guns in person even if you already have a license. If you are found with an unlicenced gun it's good enough to get you a 10 year sentence out in 5 for good behaviour. But obviously the above is still not perfect because we had a guy on the rampage too, I'd like to see a ban on sale of ammunition to all civillians and Farmers and such like being stocked with ammunition through the police force at the farmers cost. I reckon that would pretty much sort it out.
