What are some positive and negative things your generation brought to society?

I was curious as to what people on this board think were some positive/negative things their generation brought to the table...

One positive thing I think my generation has done is we helped put this countries first black president in office (I mean other generations played a part but, if it wasnt for my generation Obama probably wouldnt of been elected). (even though all politicians are grimy and it really doesnt mean shit, but thats another story that can be told another day).

I'm not sure my generation brought anything too good besides maybe technology and moore freedom (sexual and freedom of choice, intended as independendence of mind towards older generations - not that it's always good IMO)

There are somethings that we would like to bring but the system is too old and anachronistic to keep up with changes. Here in Italy, at least.

In comparison with people who lived the last century we sound very FLAT to me, which could be a good thing to cuz it means we had no world war, no '68 revolutions, no golpes and stuff.

Positives: More normalization of 'interracial' relationships

Negatives: Everyone wants to be rich and famous these days. i.e. - American Idol, America's Got Talent, etc. (Good shows by the way lol) Seems like no one wants to be an account or have what is considered to be a normal job outside of the limelight.

Positives: My generation is more open minded and accepting of diversity...

Negatives: The sexualization of youth and the glorification of booze, drugs and sex.

 

Negative: teenage pregancy and 'competitions' between teenage girls on who can get pregnant first.

I can't think of a single "good" thing that my generation is responsible for. There are only a handful of truly great generations in human history. The French of the late eighteenth century and African-Americans of the Civil Rights era are the generations that impress me the most.

And you can blame or praise UCLA (late 1960s) for the Internet.

You chose the african americans of the civil rights era who fought for freedom and then you chose the French who blatantly hated black people and were enslaving and lynching them in the late eighteenth century.

A better historian would know that I was referring to the French Revolution, which ushered in radical ideas of human freedom. The same ideas, for example, that led Haitians to revolt against the French state and successfully fight for their independence.

 

The same people who were French and alive during the French revolution were some of the same folks who wanted and had Haitians enslaved. Before, during and after the French revolution, there was slavery on the island. Right after that revolution, it was business as usual. Enslaving and lynching black people . Several of the French on the island kept it going during that revolution. It wasn't the French revolution that got my people our freedom. It was the freedom that many tasted before that revolution. Our leaders were already free! They wanted the rest to be free. This was happening before the declaration of the rights of man was ever written. We had those so called "radical ideas" from many of the people who escaped from slavery and wanted freedom for all Haitians before the French revolution. This Haitian revolution was coming with or without the French revolution. There were several attempts before the french revolution. It was only a matter of time.
We had already gathered military experience from previous battles with the Spaniards and the British.
The French on that island saw black people as nothing more than property during the French revolution. Nothing more nothing less. They kept slavery going in other countries as well. It's not what philosophy that counts it is what you do. Washington and Jefferson also believed in freedoms but they had slaves as well.
Too many people are whitewashed! You talk to any Haitian historian from haiti and they'll show you history of Haitian already trying to gain freedom before the french revolution and how the french were lynching, raping, and kiilling black people during the late 18th century.

I find it hard to get passed my Haitian ancestors torments before the French revolution, during the revolution and after the French revolution. Answer me this. Who was causing the slavery in the late 18th century for Haitians?
What led my ancestors to the successful revolt was the reinstitution of slavery!
not the so called freedoms that came from the French revolution. They weren't "radical ideas" to my ancestors when they were escaping slavery before the French revolution. They were standard! Nothing is more of a motivator to gain independence than the French knocking at your door trying to enslave and lynch you. Way too much whitewash! The french on that island resisted heavily against the freedoms of black people. If you were on the island back then, there is no way you would have thought of this comment. They would have told you get back to work. :smt018

 

So on the topic at hand......

I'm 31 and honestly, my generation hasn't done shit.

If we want to take credit for electing a black man..... maybe. However, if your honest with yourself you know young people don't fuckin vote. Every presidential election they record more and more people under 30 voting, but compared to people over 50? It's a fraction. Obama's election crossed generational lines. America all at once decided it was about time. OR, they just felt HE WAS A BETTER CANDIDATE, REGARDLESS OF RACE. It is possible you know. Black people don't have to be given everything due to being black already.

Also, though not new, we have taken the Idea's of a Green Society to a whole new level.

Negatives a plenty though:

Making dumb rich hollywood bitches even richer: Khardasians, Lohans,
Hiltons, and the like...

Reality T.V.

Creating an idea of a ME society

Still an America that refuses to see people as equals, I.E. though illegal, still discrimination a plenty.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. The Microwave generation has people thinking everyone owes them something or that it has to happen yesterday.
