Intel's plans to invest $8 billion to build a chip plant in Oregon and to upgrade existing facilities in the U.S.

The new $4.6 billion plant underway at Globalfoundries' base near Saratoga Springs will employ 1,400 people, 100 of them for folks with PhD degrees. Intel's new investments will create 1,000 jobs in the U.S.

Both intend to make chips with the latest cutting-edge technologies. Intel's new plant - its first in four years - is scheduled to start production in 2013 and is being designed to churn out next-generation products. Globalfoundries expects to be turning out state-of-the art semiconductor wafers in 2012.

The production of semiconductors, the tiny chip that makes all sorts of electronic devices work, remains a major industry for the U.S. and a leading export. The Semiconductor Industry Association pegs the U.S. at a 50% share of global $226 billion chip production though 80% of the market for semiconductors is outside the U.S.
