Unfortunately you had bad timing with this article which is why this thread may not garner many comments.
I don't know about that. Most women may not realize that they will be raped by someone close to them...........I think most think it will be a stranger in the night. Maybe DB has done a service making people aware those around you aren't above hurting you.
The only way I could imagine being raped is if some dude knocked me over the head, or gang raped in or out of prison. I couldn't even imagine if I was gang raped, i'm sure that would be the equivalent of how I would feel if I were a woman that had been raped. A man never wields his power in an effort to hurt a woman, never. I know there are some women that can beat a man sensless, can pepper spray the shit out of a dude, but at the end of the day males are physically dominant over women. This dominance is not meant to be used against females,, but for feamales, to aid them, to support them, to help them grow...honestly, my heart honestly hearts hurts at the thought of some below life ______ (insert your own remark) hurting some young girl, some defenseless woman, a friends wife, my sister, or mother...
Agreed, it's a difficult subject, regardless of timing. The statistics on the number of women who will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime are shocking, there's no way around it. The number of reported rapes is shocking, and yet it's estimated that the vast majority of rapes are unreported, estimates are as high as 75%, which is astounding and heart-breaking. IMO forewarned is forearmed, avoiding the subject entirely does no good to anyone. In fact so much about rape is termed off-limits for discussion or in poor taste, and I think that only contributes to the problem. No good comes from avoiding the issue, or refusing to discuss it. Women who have been raped need support, understanding, and compassion, how are they to have any hope of getting that from people who don't want to discuss it or are afraid to confront it for whatever reason. How are men to come any closer to being able to understand rape if they never talk about it because they feel there's no way they'll ever be able to understand. How are parents, mothers and fathers, supposed to educate their children, to give them the best chances of avoiding being raped, and of surviving if they are? Education is rarely a bad thing, and in this case it's absolutely necessary. People as a whole still have a long way to go in understanding rape, and the people who suffer the most from people's ill-informed attitudes are the victims, and I think most people would agree that is unacceptable and inappropriate. It's something Dreaming saw in the news, she posted it to get feedback, she clearly didn't do so to upset anyone, however given the statistics on rape it would be nearly impossible for it to not touch a nerve with several people here. I can see why some might feel it's bad timing due to recent events, however I fail to see how making more women aware is a bad thing, regardless of the timing. I am sorry that Dreaming felt she needed to remove the link, this is a forum of adults, if a thread doesn't interest us or has the potential to be upsetting, we can simply skip it. Unfortunately, this is something that some women have to learn to deal with, you cannot life a productive life in a vacuum.
I'm not sure what recent events you're talking about... And I have been raped, actually, so I knew it was potentially triggering, but felt that it was too important of a conversation to have. I felt that the author was so articulate in the way women sometimes have to think to survive...'who will rape me? when will it happen? what will I do? what will people say? am I wearing the wrong dress/shorts/jeans? should I change- just in case?' Can you imagine living like that? I removed the link because I was tired of getting one line responses that just said 'bad timing', and I was getting aggravated. I thought the fact that it garnered so much attention and comment on the internet, it would be an interesting and thoughtful discussion here about why men like Julian Assange are supposedly incapable of raping a woman just because he's considered a liberal hero. It makes no sense. Why aren't more people talking about rape? REALLY talking about it? I don't know. The more we hide from a topic, the more taboo it becomes. When is good timing to discuss something like this? After the fact? I sure hope not...
i lost interest after the first post, tbh i was like 'what kinda bullshit thread is this' considering guys are always on the suspected end of these offenses.
Well, men are usually the ones perpetrating the offenses...*however* the author in the original post did state that rape is not mutually exclusive to men doing violence to women, so you shoulda stuck to it.
im a black man, that has a love for white women (among others) in no way, shape, or form am I touching the rape topic, since white women 'claiming' to have been raped by blacks, were found to be lying their asses off in the past, just to get brothas locked away as a form of racial injustice. this is kind of a touchy subject and fuel for anti-WWBM partnership groups. :smt062
You mean some ww, Im sure.... it was just weird how you wrote that. Also, women, in general (of all "races") have claimed false rape charges - and it has been towards men of all "races". Im not sure why you pick specifically ww falsely blaming bm in this subject - that is screwed. Most rapecharges are real and not made up.. and also to consider is that the majority of rapes never get reported. Dont make this an anti wwbm thing... that makes up a very little part of the whole.
