Could Haley Barbour's comments on race doom his potential 2012 GOP presidential run before it even starts?

On Tuesday, the Mississippi governor sought to clarify his remarks to the Weekly Standard's Andrew Ferguson about growing up at the height of the civil rights movement in Mississippi.

"I just don't remember it as being that bad," Barbour had told Ferguson, noting that his hometown, Yazoo City, Miss., wasn't at the flash point of racial tensions at the time.

The governor went on to credit the Citizens Council, a group that has been viewed as pro-segregationist, for helping to integrate his hometown more peacefully than other cities in the Deep South were integrated

After a public outcry, Barbour clarified his remarks Tuesday, insisting he wasn't endorsing the group's views generally. "My point was my town rejected the Ku Klux Klan, but nobody should construe that to mean I think the town leadership were saints, either," Barbour said in a statement. "Their vehicle, called the 'Citizens Council,' is totally indefensible, as is segregation."

But that's not likely to quiet Barbour's critics. On Monday, Democrats seized on the governor's comments, as well as his recollection of attending a Martin Luther King Jr. rally when he was a teenager. Barbour admitted that he spent more time "watching the girls" than listening to the civil rights icon.

UnChosen...you DO remember that this is Mississippi. The people there somehow forgot the memo that this is 2010 going on 2011. It's the state that still had segregated proms and what have you. As for Gov. Barber, he's a clueless person who basically cares more about himself than the people.

Whatever, I prefer it out in the open anyway; leave nothing unveiled.

even before this mess, his state was doing horrible and his record for that state is terrible as well. I never saw him as a front runner. Mitt Romney is the one to beat honestly speaking.

Mississippi is a backward state in my opinion. The best example was the people voted not to change the state flag which has a Confederate emblem on it.

I find it so damn sad that most of us are still living in the past instead of moving forward to living in the future. Come on, this is 2010, not 1930's or 1940's! Soon, we'll be able to live in peace.

Say..in about 20 to 50 years from now, most of us will be stopping living in the past.

If you haven't noticed now...he IS a conservative Republican who has been involved with politics as of late. So of course, his views are pretty much aligned with the "Bush-Reagan Conservative" ideology instead of "Goldwater conservatism."

I know we can dub him the "black sheep" of the forums, but I do respect him for giving out his opinions, despite vehement disagreements. And to further add, he's definitely not like averagenegro and Jum90 from YouTube. And they were two self-hating black men.

    What would Alison Carroll do?

Could you be a bit more specific when you are talking about "you brothers"?

Also, I fail to see how the true racist are on the left with Obama being on the left.
