Are Black Americans programmed to hate themselves?

As a woman who has never dated a man over 6' tall, I will have to respectfully disagree. Height and muscle mass don't matter, it's whatever you find attractive about the person.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Take someone like Angelina Jolie and for every 10 men who find her hot you can find one or two that do not for one reason or another.

There are several pictures of men that women have posted that they find HOT HOT HOT, and I think to myself, really?

But, beauty can also be culturally based. I work with a Korean woman and she told me that when she went back to Korea to go to college in the 90s, she was considered heavy (she's 5'5" and weighs about 110 lbs) and she couldn't find clothes in her size. ALL OF THE WOMEN were under 100 lbs. That was the ideal in Korea at the time. Then they discovered that the women were having a hard time getting pregnant (duh) so they encouraged the women to gain a bit of weight.

As for the OP saying that Wesley Snipes is considered ugly in the US, I'll have to, again, respectfully disagree. I've always found him incredibly hot (though he hasn't aged well).

Beauty is a very personal thing, I think. It truly depends on your preferences and what you find attractive or not attractive on any given individual.

I can't say that I agree with you. I have never once felt that I didn't measure up, or that I was somehow less than. We are strong proud race. We came from slaves of our own people, to slave of strangers had our religion, voice an culture, robbed from us and were so resilient that we created an artistic, vibrant, expressive culture of our own.

I am disappointed in the presentation of many of us black males, but that does not mean I am not proud of who are and we are. I feel sorry, but not sorry to be black I feel sorry that we have squandered that which was fought for by those greater than us.

What people say and reality are often two totally different things. The Average hight of most American is 5"10 and shorter. So most women haven't date 6' men either.

"There are three kinds of lies....lies...damn lies....and statistics---Mark Twain

    You love you some statistics...LOL

What are the stats on fat whites????????

    Fat mexicans??????????

    Fat puerto ricans?????????????

Seems like you can't handle the fact that Black people aren't the worst things on Earth.

Whenever something positive is said about us...you swoop-down like the angel of death..

    What happened to you???

    Swing and a miss.

Wealthy and middle-class Blacks have far less plastic surgery than other groups and it's not even close.

That was my point. Maybe if more of us had money we'd indulge in these elective surgery like white people seem to do. I just don't see how white people could have the market cornered on low self esteem. I honestly feel if more of us had money like whites and asians we'd indulge in that shit too. Like I said before its just a thought.

Book I never said all women felt that way about height but from what I see with my own two eyes women tend to go for and are attracted to taller men or more specifically they aren't attracted to short men as much. It may not hold true for you but even on this board when some of the women talk about guys who turn them on they're pretty tall. Its instinctual, a bigger mate is more capable of bringing food home and protecting the family.

    The solution: hate everyone equally.

    Fuck this thread too.

    I doubt it.

If we have money to blow on cars..houses..and bling we can't afford...I don't see why cosmetic surgery would be unattainable...especially since we hate ourselves soooo much.

well as the thread starter i apologize for my limited perspective.

making generalizations is not always a good idea. sometimes generalizations/stereotypes get reinforced but there will always be exceptions to the rule.

and i appreciate the discussion overall. i'm learning a lot from all of the comments!

    keep it coming.

however i can appreciaite what MrFantastic is trying to point out.

    Lies??

If you tell me I'm wrong, then you'd better prove your right.[/Micheal and Janet Jackson]

All you said bruh was "nanny, nanny boo boo." You offered nothing in report, nothing in retort, nothing to repudiate anything I have said to this point. All your slow ass did was say "We aren't the only ones"

bah! I have said it before when you were exercising your little man-love game with ole boy.

Percent of adults age 20 years and over who are overweight (and not obese): 34%

    - Blacks have 51 percent higher prevalence of obesity,
    - Hispanics have 21 percent higher obesity prevalence compared with whites.
    - Approximately 30% of non-Hispanic whites are obese

Studies have shown that, in general, African Americans:

    - Acept larger body sizes
    - Feel less guilt about over-eating
    - Are less likely to practice unhealthy dieting behaviors, such as over-exercising or purging
    - Although African Americans have a healthy acceptance of a wider range of body sizes, our tolerance may lead to more obesity and serious obesity-related health problems.

Environmental influences on what we eat include:

    Availability
    Convenience
    Cost
What the others around us are eating
What we were taught as children

    Anymore questions young brutha?

This is a great point! Colorism is a worldwide problem that will take 400-500 years to undo. All people have beauty in them even if that beauty is not European.

Grace Jones is ugly, not because of her color but because she is very unfeminine.

I hate coming into these threads all late. I haven't read all the replies, but I think because of the "European Standard of Beauty", there are some people who are brainwashed to think that White, anything Light or Mixed is the best etc. I also think that on the flip-side, if you take 2 people are who are the same complexion, lets take 2 dark skinned people and have more "African" features (what's considered in general daily speak), you can't fall back on the former as far as being the standard. Then it becomes attractive vs. unattractive. Then what? You can't call it self-hate, especially if you're Black.

Im confused by this... Are the 2 african people mates or what?

No, it's just a comparison of the same sex.....

I'm taking away the European standard of beauty and focusing on what are deemed African features - solely in a who's hotter contest so-to-speak. You can't fall back on the former, cause it won't work. Some people just aren't attractive to people and some are.

This is just playing Devils advocate to the self-hating/loathing aspect on the other end of the spectrum.

or, even among two people who share similar European features, one can make a judgment as to who is the more attractive. Now what is that judgment/opinion based on? certainly a bunch of factors that don't have anything to due with race!

    You love you some deflection...LOL.

I don't think Ymra can not handle what you suggest, I think he's very aware of what is plaguing American society today, and as a result, Blacks. His reply was merely pertaining to the 'high esteem" in Black people when it came to looks, suggesting it was somewhat artificially inflated because it's based on a much larger margin of what is acceptable, but not necessarily conducive to one's health. Certainly you can respond by comparing Black obesity stats to the stats of "other races", but frankly that only keeps you comparing to the worst, no?..."Oh sure I'm fat, but at least I'm not as fat as White man next door...pass me a twinkie". At least Whites unabashedly yell to anyone with ears how very fat they are, how heart disease and obesity is killing them, and what needs to be done about it.

I applaud Ymra for saying shit you don't want to hear. If it makes you feel better to hear that more 'Whites/Mexicans/PR's' are fatter, then fine. It still doesn't change the high amount of Blacks who are fat, and if you care as much as you seem to, you'd be concerned by those stats instead of insisting they are lies. I know I don't dismiss the figures when they speak on Whites who are fat. I can see it for myself, myself included. Rather than accuse Ymra of being the kiss of death (I think your ostrich head in the sand mentality is far deadlier), you should be pissed that there is chemically altered addictive cheap fast food on every corner in predominately Black neighborhoods, while in whites there is a fruit & veggie mart. If you don't question how the state of those disproportionate obesity numbers in Blacks came to be (instead of questioning the stats), then you should.
