A good gift....

...so I need to figure out what kind of gift to get my nanny. We plan on giving her a week's worth of pay, but isn't that standard? She's freaking amazing, especially with me being gone now. She's worked way more than what she is schedule to do. No matter when we need her she's there, sometimes she just shows up and takes over for no real reason, she truly loves the kids. Just damn amazing! But she is also the hardest person to get anything for. No matter what you ask "I'm fine" is usually her reply. She's low key, very calm, very patience and with my kids she has to be.

So what is a good GENERAL, but thoughtful gift? Any ideas.

    Here she is "Chikako"

I thought about an iPAD.....we bought her the iPOD touch for her birthday. But that seems so impersonal.

What about a day at the spa? Would she like to be pampered for a day? A massage, mani/pedi, that sort of thing...

If you're willing to drop the extra 600 and change on an ipad I say go for it. I'm not a fan because it lacks flash technology but it is an amazing device. The apps and ereader alone are worth the buy and if you want personalize make a slide show of pics of the kids with her favorite music in the background.

We were in chat last night and someone was asking for gift ideas and they were rejected as too impersonal. I am baffled why people keep referring to a gift as impersonal. What makes a gift personal. You mean like sewing a stocking with their name on it??

If you sat down and spent time out of your day thinking of them and what would this person like and use, then how is it impersonal? I think the act of thinking of them and trying to give them a bit happiness with a gift/thought tailored to them is pretty personal.

Impersonal gift to me would be say the way a friend of mine did it. She is an older lady and she would go to the bank get a bunch of crisp $100's and line up envelopes and give everyone the same amount and no card or thought with it. Though most people can use cash it was rather assembly line and impersonal.

I think an Ipad is an up to date and wonderful gift. Andrae's idea of putting a display on it is great. I have yet to meet a tech savy person who would say ewww an Ipad. Most would love it.

  5. I think a beauty salon / spa voucher would be lovely. And a nice card telling her how awesome and appreciated she is :)

I have to agree on the spa thing - IF she is a woman that likes that of course.
A full day of pampering with a nice card... Then, I think an iPad would be awesome too!!! ARGH! Now I dunno which idea I like better:) Perhaps both!!! LOL

It's a perfect gift for someone who works so hard for you and your family. STFU and do it.

I would say step out the male perspective and don't do an Ipad unless she is into that kind of thing. Since the women who say "spa" are western, I wouldn't necessarily trust their judgment either.

    Who is this person?

Is what she likes influenced by a particular cultural perspective?

I'm curious what being western has to do with it. When I think of spa I think more of eastern types of medicine, like certain massages and aromatherapy and "natural healing" sorts of things.

She's Japanese from a very small town. I don't think she would actually use the spa. I'm thinking of something from Tiffany's. That lil blue box is always a winner.

Yeah my mum was a nanny for a few famillies and from some she got really nice things but one family didn't give her anything even though she looked after their 3 kids and hundreds (okay exaggeration) of cats for months and months. She didn't expect anything but said a card would have been nice.

A spa does seem like a nice gift but it's probably not something that I'd want. I'd appreciate it but if someone got me that then it'd show they didn't really know me. Trust yours and your wives instincts... I'm sure she'll be thrilled with whatever you get her but I would freakin' LOVE an iPad. Tiffany's is also a lovely idea. ;)
