Rangel didn't pay the property taxes on a villa he owned in the Virgin Islands, the earned income of which he used to pay off the villa's mortgage.

He DID pay his federal income taxes every single year he's been employed.

You generalized by saying Rengel didn't pay his 'taxes' for 10 years, that's my point.
Wesley Snipes is going to prison for evading FEDERAL income taxes; NO ONE is convicted for excluding a line item property tax on a federal income tax form.

Rengel cut a $5-10,000 check and the matter was settled. It was an oversight, not a criminal conspiracy.

Generalizing = false representation = bad info.

It's not you I'm coming down on, archangel, just that at work and in the media, folks try to inflate Rengel into this massive tax cheat who should be in prison because he didn't pay his property taxes in the V.I.

People love to say, 'if I did what Rengel, a member of Congress, was allowed to get away with, I'D be in prison!!'

It’s a damn shame to see this man go to jail………After all the quality entertainment he has brought the world, you mean to tell me no good-old-boy pardon could be found for this star?…………unlike other social groups we very few action heroes…….to take one of our best and publicly disgrace him like this to set an example is a black eye for black men. The IRS worked things out with Willie Nelson, they worked things out with Burt Reynolds, the worked things out with Sly Stallone, the worked things out with Robert De’nero they worked things out with Arnold…….but it was too tempting not to make an example out of Wesley……sometimes, to the powers that be, it seems there is nothing more gratifying than neutralizing a black superstar……..

 

I didn't ........but did he address his association with ARL and the letters he wrote to the IRS? Curious if they are making an example out of him because of those things. No doubt there are those who have done the same thing as him and received far less punishment.

 

Would you mind providing links showing articles for tax problems for Sly Stallone and Robert De Niro? I was unsuccessful on finding any articles on the internet about either one of their tax problems. I'd like to know if we are comparing apples to apples before commenting on those cases.

From what I have found, Burt Reynolds' tax problems was with the state of California and not the IRS. Arnold's problems were in relation to payroll taxes on his household help. His people released a statement showing where he paid a little over $20 in administrative fees to settle the case. They stated that the bill was due to an IRS computer glitch that did not have his social security number matching with his employer identification number on the tax forms for his household help. As a person who has to call on clients behalf to the IRS, computer glitches are not uncommon and are usually resolved when all appropriate paperwork is sent in. If there are other cases involving these two that you were referring to, please provide links to them as well.

I'll say that Willie's would be a similar one to compare. Unfortunately, without knowing the specific details of their cases, its would be hard to say why he wasn't required to do jail time and Wesley was. I also think that it would interesting to know if some of the claims that I have heard were made by Snipes were true or not (i.e. filing as a nonresident alien, etc.) In my opinion, the IRS and courts will always give harsher sentences for fraudulent tax returns over filing negligence.

 

Are you referring to an IRS power of attorney or a regular power of attorney?

I was just curious. I know that I have to explain that the IRS POA is limited, and some people don't understand that. Even with a regular POA signed, I'm sure that the IRS still views the taxpayer as having the responsibility to be sure that the returns are being filed. You can't just sign that responsibility totally away.
