nice story that was profiled on the washington post. I can assume that IR are going from being tolerated to being accepted and hope it comes to be the norm and then become to be a situation where it is even worth talking about. it would be just a normal thang like breathing. anyway , it is a story of the nice guy getting the hottie and trust me she is hot

"A Navy Seal flag on his balcony made her think he was a military man; the tightness of his workout shorts had her wondering if he was gay"
Hey, don't we have some military men on this board that dress the same?

Adams gathered her nerve and walked upstairs to tell Winkfield she was making cupcakes and that he was welcome to come down and have one. That night he stayed at her place until almost 2 a.m., talking and inhaling the baked goods
I bet she baked in some of the good-good to keep his ass laying back...

No seriously, nice story, but it struck me that they merely did what we have done here countless times over the course of our lives. I don't see anything extraordinary about this relationship - perhaps if they came upon extreme opposition, or he gave her his kidney, it would stand out. Exposure is always good I suppose....

That's exactly why its an amazing story sweetheart. For once its just a normal interaction not some nightmarish trial to be together. Its just a guy who took a chance and got the girl who he'd one day marry.

How is it"amazing", that warrants being put in the Llife & Style section of the Washington Post? That it's an IR story, without them wanting to highlight that it's an IR story? It's your generic (albeit boring) boy meets girl story. Nothing jumps out at me.

If it's the IR angle, then discuss it, instead of giving it the dismissive one sentence. Because that's what the reporter is really wanting to tell. The header "The wedding of Ashley Adams and Kyle Winkfield" Ok,...now tell me the great story about it, what about it? That they noticed each other cause he thumped hard above when he walked and she baked him cupcakes?

(ps: we are just discussing here, cool? No-one is arguing :smt061)

    Definitely not arguing baby girl.
I guess for me its seeing an ir couple for once where the headline and subject of the story is race. Its just a guy and girl and in the US that's a huge deal. Truthfully its probably the only story I've seen like it.

I can't say that, cause I see the opposite of the stereotype more often than the stereotype itself.

Which kinda brings me to my point. If it's not really about race, what's it about? There are millions of more interesting couple stories than this couple. Frankly, it's lazy reporting. I bet she typed it up in an hour with a deadline looming. Here was an opportunity to highlight the issue of IR marriages, the obstacles and idiosyncrasies that intra-races may not deal with, and if its not the case with this couple, then give the reader a story about any couple they can sink their teeth into. Their actual story is normal and somewhat boring, which leads me to believe it's not about their story after all. That's all I'm saying.

Perhaps that was the point Kuno. To not make it about race because IR marriages shouldn't be viewed as any different. There are stories highlighting same race couples all the time and no one says 'oh look, two white people got married', or 'two black people got married', so why make a point of saying a BM and a WW got married. Calling attention to it in that way simply makes it seem like it's unusual or unnatural IMO. I think it's great that they highlighted a happy couple, the fact that's it's an IR couple is obvious to anyone who looks at the pictures, so I really don't see a need to point it out. Also maybe the couple just wants to be a happy couple, rather than the poster couple for IR. It's also possible that they don't feel they've faced any challenges as an IR couple, so there's nothing to point out. I've personally never experienced any of the problems that some people here have mentioned, so for me there also would be no challenges to highlight.

I'm not arguing either, just speaking my mind. ;)

Right, I'm not disagreeing with the way you and others are receiving it, because obviously, the reporter is pretty much omitting the racial factor, so I get your response of 'yes!, thank God race isn't the story".

Thus, what we are left with is the actual story. When you said "There are stories highlighting same race couples all the time", ask yourself if this as an intra-race story would have gotten the editorial pass to print. As I said in my first post, we here live and breathe these relationships everyday of our lives, and yes they are regular ones, just like these two Joe's. I'm positive that to make the WP's special Sections, you should have an interesting story to tell, since grabbing people's attention is your end game. And yet she chose to tell (write) a mediocre piece on 2 people meeting in an apartment complex. Who oh by the, happen to be B & W. Why is she highlighting this couple again??
BTW, it's not or never was that serious to me, even though it seems to be with all the typing, ha ha.

**And trust me Espy, no disclaimers ever need apply when discussing topics of interest with you...now yer man Andrae, ok, he and I can get feisty, but damn I love his analytical mind, he is a a lot of fun to debate with.

Reading that story makes me wonder about a few things. When I lived in an apartment for some years I never socialized with any of my neighbors. A lot of my friends met their bf/gf in their apartment complex. Deep down I feel I might of missed out on meeting someone nice if I had socialized more with people in my unit.

I guess for me being a bm who exclusively dates ww I love seeing stories that make my relationship seem normal. I never read anything like this so I don't know what a good how we met story is but I do like seeing a couple who met the way everyone else met and it being a beautiful story not depressing we beat the odds story. I just don't like IR being seen as this incredible struggle. It makes dating seem like an obstacle.
