What dictates personal preference

I know someone will assume I'm just stirring up trouble but I really want to know, what kind of social, cultural and environmental factors play a role in why someone prefers White women/Black men (or people with a certain hair color, personality type, body shape et cetera). Some of it is genetically based and universal among humans (like a preference for men with broad shoulders or women with a low waist to hip ratio) but some of it has to be environmental. Some psychologists believe that we are most attracted to the people we are exposed to on a regular basis and this makes a lot of sense to me, but many people here were raised in neighborhoods where most of the people shared the same racial background.

Do you think everyone is secretly turned on by the idea of being intimate with people who are different from them (ie. the contrast in complexion between Black people and White people) and are just 'bluffing' when they claim otherwise or what? I'd really like to get to the bottom of why some people (apparently) have a stronger interracial attraction than other people do.

Why do people ask this question but never wonder why people like blue eyes over brown or short over tall or long hair over short hair. This shit is lame.

But I do wonder why people like blue eyes, tall men, long hair etc. I mentioned that in the OP.

I think there are two different kinds of preferences : preferences for traits that indicate health or fertility (ie. muscles, smooth skin, symmetrical facial features,) and preferences that must be purely cultural (ie. dark skin, black hair, tattoos, ).

Personally I'm not solely attracted to any particular type of man. If someone were to ask me why I find BM attractive, I'd simply answer why wouldn't I? I grew up in an entirely white community, so it's clearly not cultural. Some things simply defy explanation, and this is one of those things that I don't see a point in explaining anyway. By asking the question, it implies that the choice is out of the ordinary, or inappropriate, and I don't see it as either.

People are attracted to who they are attracted to. Sometimes it can be a cultural thing, or a biological thing, or a psychological thing, and sometimes it's completely inexplicable. I see no reason to try to understand it unless someone continually makes dangerous choices. Bottomline, there may be no specific reason at all why you are attracted to WW, and no one else is going to help you understand that. I think you'd be better off addressing why it is that your attraction to WW repulses you so, and why you come here if you never intend to act upon it. The vast majority of BM here are not ashamed of their attraction to WW, so I doubt you'll find the answers you seek.

While I see how andrae may exhibit some frustration with this question, this thread is actually legit in a sense that there should be some sort of reasoning behind why people like what they like. Preferences aren't limited to and either/or position as people do so feel. Rather, it's more accurate to say it's a combination of nature and nurture. Also, there's the individualistic perception of beauty and how we allow ourselves to be ingrained with such thoughts. It's like why people adopt more progressive views and why others prefer to be reactionaries? It's a personal comfort that we have within ourselves.

There is nothing inappropriate about an attraction to any sex, race, 'type' etc., I'm just curious. I think everything has a reason and can be explained.

Have you always had an interest in 'Black culture'?

In general I would agree that many things can be explained, but some cannot IMO.

I don't perceive a difference between black people and white people, we're all just people to me. So as I said it has nothing to do with culture. I was taught to respect all living things, and no one ever specified that respect only applied to white people, or people who look like me, or who are in my socioeconomic bracket, etc. It was just a blanket statement, you respect everyone until they give you a reason not to.

I also don't view it as a preference. As I said my preference is to men, that's as much as I narrow it down.

For the same reason some people like one kind of food and others dont.

I think the vast majority of people don't have an exact answer to why they are attracted so something particular. It just is.

What dictates personal preference for me? As a kid I ate a lot of vanilla ice cream so it was only right I continue spooning vanilla.

I was raised around Black folks so what does that say about me? Am I conditioned to like what I like cause of what I saw around me?

No one gives a shit about this crap unless it has to do with Black and White people dating/fucking/marrying/liking each other.

    LOL!

So aside from spooning, I assume you'll continue eating it as well, right?

I always wonder that too, if people only pick people based on preferences of race, then what happens when employers do it, its their personal preference and as long as they dont tell anyone they do it. I would think it would be wrong ethically though, but hey we dont have a right to a job.
