Cam Newton Under NCAA Investigation? Another Heisman Trophy Scandal?

It hasn't been but a few weeks since Reggie Bush, winner of the 2005 ***********366388]Heisman Trophy, voluntarily gave the trophy back to The Heisman Trust because of deemed reception of gifts while a player at the University of Southern California. On Thursday, ***********0058a6]ESPN announced that this season's frontrunner for the ***********366388]Heisman, Auburn University's Cam Newton, may have been under NCAA investigation since at least December 2009 for allegedly shopping himself out to play college football for cash.
Cam Newton, according to sources, is alleged to have been represented by a man who solicited cash to sign a letter of intent to play college football for Mississippi State University, ESPN reported. A ***********366388]junior who had been suspended from the University of Florida's national championship team in 2008, Newton had been searching for a major college to take him on for his senior year. According to former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond, his teammmate from the 1980s approached him in December, told him he was representing Cam Newton, and said that "it would take some cash to get Cam." Bond informed Greg Byrne, Mississippi State's athletic director, and left the matter at that.
But ESPN has learned that an ***********366388]NCAA investigation into the matter was launched. Although the NCAA, as reflects their policy, would not confirm or deny whether or not an investigation was currently taking place, ESPN reported that "multiple sources" had confirmed that Byrne contacted SouthEast Conference headquarters with the allegation, passing along Bond's information.
The teammate in question, according to unnamed ESPN sources, is Kenny Rogers, a Mississippi State ballplayer from 1982-85 who is listed as an agent and contact for a Chicago-based company called Elite Football Preparation. The organization hosts camps in Chicago, Alabama, and Mississippi. According to a Birmingham News story from 2008, Elite "matches high school athletes with college programs."
The pay-for-play scandal comes as Cam Newton, a Georgia high school standout and one-time backup quarterback at Florida, is being touted as the best college player in nation, having led the Auburn Tigers to a 9-0 season (thus far), ***********0058a6]a #3 AP Poll and #2 BCS Standings ranking, and a shot at the national championship.
"During the 2009 football season," John Bond said in a ***********0058a6]statement given by his attorney to the Associated Press, "I was contacted by a former football teammate, who represented to me that he was speaking for the Newton camp. He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State, but that a specified payment would have to be made."
Bond said Rogers had told him he was already receiving offers from schools for up to $200,000, but Newton really liked Mississippi State due to his former relationship with their head coach, Dan Mullen, and would consider playing for the school for $180,000.
Bond said ***********366388]NCAA investigatorshad paid him a visit in September and also met with Mississippi State officials on the matter.
John Bond told ESPN:
"I have no agenda other than protecting Mississippi State. We've done what we were supposed to do from the very beginning. Mississippi State has done nothing wrong, and I've done nothing wrong. It's been handed off to the NCAA, and it's in their hands now. I don't know what happened at Auburn. I don't know why he went to Auburn. That's not my concern. My concern is Mississippi State and making sure this doesn't cause us any trouble."
But Cam Newton's father, Bishop Cecil Newton, maintains that there has been no improprieties. He told ESPN, "If Rogers tried to solicit money from Mississippi State, he did it on his own, without our knowledge."
Newton admitted that he knew Rogers, had known of him since 2008 and met him in person when Cam made his official visit to the Mississippi State campus. He said that the NCAA had sent him a letter asking for financial statements, so he had turned over bank records and church statements to the investigation.
Cecil oversees Holy Zion Center of Deliverance, a small church in Newnan, Georgia. The church has been besieged with building code problems for the past year and recently went through the renovations to bring the edifice under compliance. His wife, Jackie, told ESPN to take a quick look at their church and you would know that they had no money.
"I'm just trying to protect my son's interests, because he's fought very hard to get back where he is," Cecil Newton said. "It's a hell of a fight when people give up on you and think they'll never see you or hear from you again."
Newton was referring to his son's suspension from the University of Florida's football team in 2008 after being arrested and charged with the theft of a laptop computer. ***********0058a6]According to the Orlando ***********0058a6]Sentinel, Cam Newton was arrested on charges of burglary, larceny and obstruction of justice after allegedly taking a laptop from another student's room, painting it, then tossing it out his window when investigators attempted to verify the serial numbers on the device.
NCAA recruiting violation allegations, if found to have merit, can result in censure of a school's programs, the vacating of wins, and even suspension from eligibility for postseason play. For the ***********366388]Reggie Bush infractions, USC was placed on probation for four years, lost 30 scholarships for three years, was declared ineligible for bowls for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, and were forced to vacate the last two wins of their 2004 season, including their 2005 Orange Bowl victory where USC won the national championship.
Although Auburn officials have been quick to note that Cam Newton is an eligible ballplayer (there has been no movement as yet by the NCAA to charge Newton, Rogers, or any entity associated with the scandal), that status could change at any moment.

Ikr, people forget that out of all American rivalry games the Alabama vs Auburn game (aka Iron Bowl) is the second biggest rivalry, the only rivalry ahead of it is the Yankees vs Red Sox. Ive been an Auburn fan my whole life, partly due to me growing up in bama and when in bama you're either a Crimson Tide fan or a War Eagle/Tigers fan. I can wait until November 26th.

Fuck Alabama lol. Im going for Lsu but Alabama is probably gonna beat them (nothing beats the Iron Bowl though espcially when the #1 team is going against a team that still has a chance to make it to the national championsjip with a win). Also Im kinda funny about sports rivalries, Idk I always have believed a true fan should never go for their main rival no matter what. I mean its one thing to root for your second or third biggest rival (georgia is auburns second biggest and lsu is #3), but for your main rival, I mean come on.

It's hard to get out of the SEC without a loss in the regular season, we'll see.

I'm pulling for Oregon out of Pac-10 loyalty.

In relation to the potential "scandal."

It's more than a little fucked up to see how these young black men frequently grow up in the most blighted areas of America; make it to college on athletic scholarships; have all the adoration that America has to offer thrown at them; and somehow they're not supposed to enrich themselves while they wait the necessary years to declare for the NFL.

Blonde sorority pussy isn't enough, they need money too.
