You know, people (regardless of race) are going to react to this sort of thing sooner or later, and it will be hell on earth when they do.

By "popo" Department, you mean the people of New York because they are the ones paying so in the end the victim's family still gets ripped off.

    crazy mayne

all cops aren't like that, but damn those shootings give the department a bad name

like i mentioned before, many departments are requiring college degrees/credits now. I don't know if that'll help as far as 'thinking before you act,' but time will tell.

hopefully through education these guys can become more cerebral, in their duties

Yea! I think they should be required to have a bachelors in either sociology or psychology. That would help to understand the public and resolve problems without putting people in prison because that doesn't work too well

if im not mistaken, criminal justice/justice degrees, require some level of sociology/psychological studies. popular degree for people looking into law enforcement (makes sense when you think about it)

during the academy, you're touching upon lots of academic issues. I know Philly PD has a 30week long academy requirement, and their curriculum goes into all that. But having a degree or even just the passing credits, adds another layer to it.

Philly doesnt require a degree, but they do recommend credits or an associates. NYPD doesnt play around, they want at least 2 year degrees i think.

You guys make good point about education and so on. But if the person has deep seated hate toward certain groups, education is only going to help a little. I have interacted with folks supposedly with higher education who hold nothing but hatred to someone who dont look like them. Most ppl think cops are bunch of idiots and low IQ pigs, that is not the case, at least to my experience. I have seen pretty sharp cops, some end up going to law school, some end up becoming judges. So this assumption that I keep hearing "cops are gunning down minority coz they're stupid" I am not really buying it.

well they are stupid, for gunning down minorities without thinking about the ripple effects within the community, and losing their career..........

but yeah, i agree with cops having to hold some degree of intelligence, without going to college. If you ever look at what it takes just to become one, you can figure that out. Like I said, in philly, the academy is 30 weeks, provided you pass written exams, oral interviews with appointed commanders, polygraphs, etc, etc. Plus it's all competitive, so at any given point, you are going against other highly-motivated individuals, that score just as well as you or higher on exams.

Look I dont wanna walk the road of bashing colleges again, as I have attended a few myself. But the notion that just coz you attended a college or graduate from one that you're intelligent is not true. There are HS drop out who are bright and made more than 6 figure. I am failling to see college grad=intelligence.

What I do t understand is how the cops felt so threatened by one vehicle in a big parking lot, you couldn't just move out of the way. Even if the boy was trying to run the cops over with his car, they couldn't manage to subdue him and or the car without shooting him and the passenger?

There's a lot we don't know. How fast was the car going? Were the two cops directly in front when it accelerated or, if not, how far away were they and in what position were they in when hit? If the young man had chest wounds, it stands to reason the shots came through the windshield. The windshield, if it's still intact, will indicate the angle of entry and proximity of the shooter. Forensics will indicate whose weapons were fired and how many times. The autopsy will indicate the angle of entry as well as the proximity of the shooter. Like I said, there's a lot we don't know. Science can provide a lot of answers, if there is a thorough investigation.

That would be true - with varying degrees. Different CJ programs offer different emphases. The particular program that I have experience with emphathized community policing which means it was heavy on the sociological/phychological side.

You know what, I don't need much science to tell me something in that story stinks.:smt068:smt038:???:
