You got some good list here Texan, but I will beg to differ to the 1st one. Money/richness, I dont think either under or over rated, it is what is, especially in capitalistic society or even anywhere for that matter! In fact, it might lean toward being underated, coz money buys: power, political status, justice, luxurious zip code, pussy, love, friends, the pastor, the rabbi, Sheikh, the witch, the Voodoo Priestess, the senator, the congressman, the mayor, the judge, the cop, all earthly things you can buy and more. LoL

    true dat

trades can pay pretty good, if you pick the right one.

and yeah lots of stuff you can learn outside of a structured classroom, as evidenced by 'online' classes. universities aren't quite saying that you don't need them to learn, but are still opening up to the notion that people can learn just as well, using other methods.

you still need those initials and the degree to become an officer tho. same thing applies to any job that requires such credentials.

on the flip side, there are still good paying jobs that don't require any outside schooling, such as police officer/firefighter. Some cities want degrees, but cities like Philly don't. They even have career ladders based on education. According to them, you can go from firefighter to lieutenant to chief, with just a high school diploma. The catch is that having an associates or bachelors, can help you place higher on promotional exams. And since those civil service jobs are competitive.......you can put 2+2 together.

Thanks Tarshi! 69 is alright but I prefer to concentrate on one end or the other at a time. It works better for me if I can either focus on what I'm feeling or what I'm doing because trying to focus on both at the same time makes it less enjoyable for me.

Money is a necessity but being rich isn't. I want enough to live on, retire on & enough cash to go shoe shopping; that would be enough for me. There's too much focus on richness & I think it takes away from the real value life has. It's like Biggie said, "Mo money mo problems". :)

Agreed, Universities and colleges are bunch of organized bullshit, mind numbing exercise camps, where you have all these rich liberal kids from prestigious background who come in and take philosophy, lit. and social study courses, and philosophize & think they are the next Aristotle and going to change the world and think everything is hunky dory.
It is a money making gimmick club, that is why you have lots of smart kids dropping out. Bill Gates, that jewish kid who created face book and many other successful entrepreneurs dropped out. If you are going to attend a college, attend a reputable one and major in something that you cant learn outside of that enviroment, otherwise it is waste of money

Exactly. Its criminal that kids don't learn a trade during the hs years. Have the ability to do something so you can support yourself outside of retail and flipping burgers.

some schools have auto/wood shop, where you learn some stuff. But adding a year of a trade (where u actually get a specialized diploma), for like a 13th grade would probably help them if they decide college isnt worth it.

Yeah let develop pride and self esteem because they have an actual skill. That's why so many kids do dumb shit because they don't have anything better to do.

honestly having a diploma just isnt enough. if they could get some sort of specialization while in school, to go into a certain field off the bat, they would have twice the amount of market power.

not only would they have the standard degree, but they would be able to go into a specific area if they chose to.

instead, you get pipe-lined to college, which can be overwhelming

yeah I remember listening to a coworker, talk about how worried he was about his son, who was majoring in math. Either that or physics. Something that not a lot of people take, if they plan on entering a specific field right out of college.

But, as long as it's a science degree, many doors will be available. Whether or not they're open, is another story.

exactly.. people who went to college on average out earn the people who didnt by millions over a lifetime.

if you just go to a trade school you would still come out good or go to a community college and you can out earn some 4 year degrees.

To all black men everywhere, if you want to prepare yourself for the 19th century then don't go to college.

No one said not to go, its just being said that often times certain aspects of college are overrated. I've literally spent thousands of dollars on classes I will never need. Most professionals will tell you you're lucky if you use 20 percent of what you learned in college.
Its more of a business than an academic institution these days.

I mentioned this before but a 2-year paralegal in 2003-04, was bringing in around 50k+year around here on average. Compare that to some 4-year degree grads, and you may see some short-changing.

If you rather have money now then finish school later, that's a way to go in that case. Same applies to Registered Nurses. 2-year associates in this city gets you somewhere between 22-25/hr (and good job security-layoffs weren't a big concern from my sources), depending on where you work. Level 1 trauma facilities generally pay more, and you don't need a BSN. Of course, many facilities offer tuition assistance and guidance, so that you can complete your ASN-BSN.

there's more to life than just 4-years straight.
