Those are ethnic heritages which are totally different from racial make up. Black dad/Japanese mom = Black/Asian biracial child. Having different ethnic heritages doesn't make you biracial. Having different races does.

Whites (not all) gave up their European heritages to adopt American heritage that was European heritages rolled up in 1 and developed differently. Whites still have a culture and not all whites even have the same culture like for example Southern whites culture is spin off of mostly Scot Irish culture. It is different from Northern whites culture. So in the end there is still something to proud of. There is still a culture you learn from a white parent, their is still white genetics and DNA going though your veins and Euro heritage is still yours if you have a white parent.

The problem is the conception of race or what you deem as "blackness". Black children with two Black parents can have self esteem issues and they supposedly know who they are. The issue is the notion of intrinsic blackness in contrast to whiteness and white purity.

Excellent post. It is not about genetic make up it is about phenotype and how society sees you in America.

Mariah Carey is half blk but she is passable & can claim some form of white or can say she is biracial.
Helle Berry, Boris Kojo, Alisha Keys look blk and accepted being blk. Even Obama answered this question to barbara Walters when she asked him
"your mother is white, how come you dont claim to be white or biracial"
"He said I look blk and society view me as blk and I embraced my blackness"

    Thank you, UnChosen1!

I remember another incident when my son was small that really confused & upset him. My 11 year old brother convinced him he was adopted & that his real mother was black. It hurt him so much & he begged me to let him go live with his 'real' mother since she was black like he was. It broke my heart to see him hurting and wanting to be where he thought he'd belong. It wasn't easy to convince him that what my brother told him was untrue. I wanted to strangle my brother! But he thought it was hilarious & the rest of the family laughed it off, too. No one understands the damage they can do & I'm afraid most of them wouldn't care if they did.

Tam, like others have said, what a great post! It sounds like you're doing a good job that'll benefit him being Black/Biracial in America.

I too, will call my future kids Black as well. I think being in this country, people like to categorize everyone to fit into a certain box(es), yet not everyone fits every criteria. It kind of sad, but it's reality.

Race in general is stupid as shit and very subjective. In the Usa its more or so about phentotype, than what you call yourself. Ive had people ask me if Im mixed because of my complexion and I tell them I mixed down the line just like MAJORITY of blacks in the Americas (and for that matter alot of whites too). At the end of the day if you look black thats what people are gonna label you, like Donald Glover said: If you look like Obama and you're jacking a car, no ones gonna say "somebody stop that mixed guy". Their gonna say somebody stop that black guy or worse nigger.

That's an interesting point. I never really tried to analyze why things were the way they were; I just knew that it was what it was. It's a lot to think about. It's hard to identify with the jacked-up mentality this society has. I'm just not wired that way.
