i just don't get the whole tipping thing...confused the hell out of me when i was over there. i'm so glad that there's no tipping in australia
Their contract says that they can only make $2 and some pubic hair and pocket lint. The rest is tips.
The simplest solution to this is state mandated pricing where the owner has to include the gratuity so servers get a decent wage and the consumer doesn't feel like they're paying extra. Simple enough right?
Simple and fair, m8.. Kinda akin to what is known as The VAT (Value Added Tax) for The World Outside of The United States. OpinionsCartoonStudios@Yahoo.Co.UK
Listen to this guys explanation of things. I always knew bartenders/waiters make shit money ( ALOT of my friends hold these kind of jobs). My thing is you should work hard regardless of if you're gonna or if you're not gonna get a tip. Some people work hard just for the tip, which leads me to the conclusion that they probably wouldnt work as hard if they atleast got minimum wage. One thing Ive noticed, is that people who use to (or still do) work as waiters/bartenders tend to be the best tippers when they go to other establishments, because they know how it is. I dont have a problem tipping, its just if you knew how much more money they make based off of tips you'd be like fuck it just give them minimum wage. Hell Im willing to go out on a limb and say most waiters/bartenders make more than your cooks and shit who make minimum wage. I have plenty of friends who make anywhere from $50 a night on tips, and others who make damn near $200 a night off of tips.
All I know is that when I was in the states, waiters were so efficient and friendly and super helpful, and it wasn't til a while into my trip that I realised it was cos they were working hard for a tip! We don't have much of a tipping culture in Australia and service is definitely sub American standards! Side note, cos I thought this was funny: in Japan, people everywhere bend over backwards to be polite to you, customer service is amazing. So it was such a hilarious contrast to step off the plane in Australia after a week in Japan and the first Australian customer service rep I see is telling some poor Japanese dude to get off the tarmac and "don't you dare ignore me!!" in such a rude tone. It was a real "welcome to Australia" moment lol
I know...It's always been a problem of mine. I guess I'm gonna need to learn how to really say what I feel more often. lmao:smt110
basically i don't like when people abuse them tho... you know, treat them like shit because they know they're lining their pockets, with a potential tip. There's an old saying that you judge a man, not by the way he treats people with power...but by the way he treats people without it. I may have it twisted a bit, but the moral remains the same. Some people are just shitty excuses of human beings.

im just saying talking down to a server, when you dont have to, shows a lack of class and honor to me. does honor even exist anymore?
lol i agree with you...i live by the code of treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself
I agree Petty. Good posts. I am bothered by folks who disrespect waiters and waitresses and don't give them their due.
