I care not about precedence, but about seeing an attractive Black man paired with an attractive White woman--which in any case would be more unprecedented than two black leads in a drama.

That being said, both actors looked great and performed well though the storyline seems to be hackneyed. Gugu is beautiful and most likely her English sensibilities and manner lend credibility to her characters back-story, something a Black American Woman evoking any "sistah girl" attitude would totally ruin (see Jada Pinkett..etc).

The story and premise seem too weak to last, especially on NBC, which kills shows right away. Again, they should have picked a White woman to play his wife and the first episode was sans any attractive White women; Gugu being the one to have a former White ex. Let's see if Boris gets an ex-White flame? Odds? I'm sure the Black love, sistah girl brigade would protest! Though Boris being jealous over an ex White man with his woman is totally acceptable. :)

I say this because I want to see it, it's not from a moral, representation, or diversity position.

I hope the show last at least half the season, because "Middle America" may not sit though watching a black couple as spies. They may think it's unbelievable . . . but not like NBC's "Chuck".

Wanting a White woman (to play the role) is not a judgement on a Black woman (that's currently playing the role). Sound Familiar! So gugu being sexy (which she is) is not the point. Hope it does well, not impressed with the seeming plot , the Event was also a let down.

A show featuring a black man already has the deck stacked against it, to begin with. If a white guy was in the lead role, the show would have probably done better because of demographics.

BUT...one drama/action series that did WELL, featuring a black lead character was 'The Unit.' Dennis Haysbert's stock went up with his performance on that show, which I do dearly miss. 5 seasons was a good run.

I think the fact that show features a couple and of course with racist/close-minded folks, a Black one at that. Had it been just Boris, I think would fair better....

America doesn't want to watch a black couple doing ANYTHING on TV, unless it's a sitcom, even then, those don't last long.

You know what, folks? Good shows with white stars...even far better ones than this....have failed rather quickly too. Not saying that race isn't a factor in white America's TV choices, but simply that race could be the least of the factors in this case.

And to be honest part of me almost hopes the show does fail. My enthusiasm waned after Boris was cast and then weeks later they cast the black chick. I was pissed in part because all the black women bitching on the internet about how NBC needed to cast a black woman, basically won and got their way. These same women would not have been nearly as vocal if the black female was cast first and there was a question of what race the husband would be.

One the two leads were decided on my enthusiasm decreased even further when I learned about the setup of the series (at least its first few eps). The black female was going to have a sister who was unattached which meant she would be eligible for any white character (can't make the show too black after all) who appeared on the scene. Even worse there was to be a recurring white male character who works for the CIA who was once in a relationship with the black female lead. What a surprise. It gets worse...when I caught the most recent ep on Tuesday that white character, who is written intentionally as being kind of a jerk, goes around every two minutes bringing up the fact to the black male lead that he used to sleep with his wife. And the black male lead simply takes it, his most aggressive response is the rolling of his eyes (I'd like to roll mine too at this point). Can you imagine a TV series about a hot white couple in which a recurring black male character had a sexual relationship in the past with the white female and mentioned it about ten times per episode? Yeah, I can't either. And so far it seems that the female lead of the show is used to draw men, seduce them which could mean kissing scenes with all sorts of other guys. But so far the black male lead, who is supposed to be a CIA legend, does not get any James Bond-like moments with chicks when he's undercover.

So why should I care about the show? Let it die. Of course when that happens the hot black female lead will get picked up by some other TV show or movie in which she is cast alongside white dudes. And Boris will go back to doin Tyler Perry films.
