WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and he has firsthand knowledge of that — because they fix his house.

Powell, a moderate Republican, urged his party Sunday to support immigration generally because it is "what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward."

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they "are doing things we need done in this country."

He added: "They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house. We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status."
In lamenting the party's rightward drift Sunday, he said Republicans must not become anti-immigration and spoke in support of legislation that would give certain children of illegal immigrants a way to become citizens if they pursue a college education or military service.

Immigration, he said, offers the U.S. a chance to maintain a youthful population in contrast with the aging of Europe and Japan.

 

Moderate Republican Powell is one of those Republicans that the extreme right want to purge from the Republican Party. I cannot wait to hear Limbaugh anfd Hannity on this tomorrow. The extreme wing of the republican party is telling us that the illegals are responsible for the high unemployment of legal americans. Is this true? I say General Powell is right on the money.

 

They do a lot of the work that others don't want to do. It's ridiculous when Americans start bitching about it, too. Like they were gonna go for that job in the first place.

When that many unemployed illegals enter the job market...they tend to have an adverse effect on wages and job security.

When that many uninsured illegals enter the US..they tend to have a detrimental effect on America's health-care system.

When that many uneducated illegals enter the country..they hurt the educational system.

If you're in mexico illegally they don't educate you...allow you to work...let you start a business...or let you buy a home.

The US should follow mexico's example.

I believe that. Schools don't even wanna send their students to study abroad in Mexico because they fear for their safety.

 

Dunno about 7 star surgeon, but I beleive he is a 4 star general. He is a very articulate and intelligent general, but he might be on a worng path here. He is a moderate republican with liberal social view. Granted some of the immigrant case can be a sad tale of story but you cant put > 12 mil illegals on the pathway to citizenship. I dont know if Powell has affinity to immigrant because his parents were a Jamican legal immigrants to this country, in any case he probably need to reassess his view on this matter.

Regardless, I respect the General, hats off. He served and climbed the ladder like a great soldier.
