ohhh (gawd the memories)...well if you could explain how anyone on EARTH could enjoy Vegemite I'll try to explain America and our guns.
No, that's actually a very good point. I'm even glad you went there first, because much as some more conservative types may think it sounds like a conspiracy theory, I think "coincidences" like this need more explanation than "tough titties". I mean, the US prison population has been on the rise for decades, particularly since we started the "War on Drugs" and began handing out serious sentences for non-violent drug offenses. And of course, a disproportionate amount of that rising prison population is made up of black men. Racists today still attempt to use this fact to suggest that blacks in general have a greater disposition towards crime or morality, in fact ... So I'll say again, I always think that something that works out to be so functionally covenient in so many ways ... I think it calls for a little more attention than to just assume it is coincidence. With the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act, the US government officially ended Jim Crow discrimination ... but this is also when our prison-industrial system begins to swell. The huge coincidence is that sending lots of black men to prison serves a lot of the same purposes that Jim Crow did (Allows economic exploitation and oppression, allows functional voter discrimination, allows support for stereotyping black men as dangerous or violent). Basically, I'm of the opinion that the system needs to change. Don't get me wrong, I'm not absolving everyone in prison for everything they've done. I'm just saying ... until I can believe that a white kid from a wealthy uppper class family and a black kid from the ghetto who both get caught with the same drug will get treated the same by the system? Well, till then I'm at least as concerned with how the system is failing black men, as I am with how black men are failing the system.
Would you date a black latina? I mean by reading this Im confused. If you mean you're attracted to these women culturally speaking, then that makes sense. But if you are speaking in a matter of race then that makes no sense because latino/a is a culture/ethnicity, not a racial group.
You know what's so funny? I usually hear this when people, for example, lets say Michael Jordans girlfriend, she is Latina and others will say, no, she's White and then I also hear it when someone like Zoe Saldana calls herself a Latina and people have to say, she's Black, and Latino/a isn't a race. Then you have people in the middle who aren't Black or White. I don't see anything wrong with calling them Latino/a.
That's racial conditioning. It keeps the racial divide stronger than ever. Those who could be and would be seen as black have an out and those who could be considered white have an in.
Man, that Zoe Saldana chick is a joke. It's people like her that make me have issues with hispanics especially the self-loathing dark skinned ones. She wants to get all offended if anyone calls her "black," but she don't have any problems getting paid seven figures to play black women. In fact, miss "I'm not black, I'm latina" is the most in demand black actress in Hollywood at present. If it's so offensive for her to be called "black," she shouldn't be making a career out of impersonating a black woman.
How about Black folks stop calling them "Spanish" , it's like calling Haitians or Coast Ivoirian's "French".
