South Carolina GOP lawmaker defends picture with 'slaves'

    BY RODDIE BURRIS

    THE STATE

A photo of South Carolina Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, outfitted in a Union Navy captain's uniform and posing with two African-Americans dressed in "slave garb," is making the rounds on the Internet.
McConnell, easily the most powerful state senator, said the photo depicts friends greeting each other after a re-enactment performance to showcase several genres of S.C. history to conferees from across the country. The picture was taken during a Republican women’s conference in Charleston last week.
But the image — with the slave dress, the period military uniform and McConnell, who's widely known in the Palmetto state for his avid participation in Civil War re-enactments and for preserving the Confederate Hunley submarine — is viewed by some as offensive.

Wouldn't it be something though if the two on the picture are actually them, as in (I forget what he goes by now) the gullah guy and the martial artist, the black conservative members on here?

Republicans don't even know their own history. The Republicans were the Northern anti-slavery abolitionists. And the Democrats were the pro-slavery Southerners who fought for the Confederacy. Even the KKK were Democrats.

Those two pages in history are stuck together.

The Republicans are the ignorant ones in this case. The Republicans have nothing to with the South and the Confederacy. The Republicans were Northerners who were anti-slavery activists.

    This is a major fail!

In short, the Southern Confederacy supported by the British Crown, Rothschild's Bank of England and Jesuit Holy Roman Empire was beaten by the courageous Northern Union Armies. Texas and Florida were mostly spared the effects of the Civil War because it ended before Northern Union Armies occupied them, but the other Southern States were completely ravaged. Many plantations had been burned, the economy was destroyed, Confederate money was worthless, and people were in starvation.

this is such an iffy subject....

the guy is a civil-war enthusiast and re-enactor. the black guys in the photo arent exactly 'helpless negroes.' The only way this shit would be racist, to me, is if the brothas were somehow forced or coerced, to dress in that garb and be treated respectively. By finding fault in this photo, you are also accepting the fact that those brothas were absolute idiots, for allowing themselves to be in that situation to begin with. Don't just blame the senator, blame those guys too. This just seems like someone cashing in on a photo op between mutual parties, that could be twisted into something much more devious.

Anyone who has 'nostalgia' for the Confederacy is suspect in my book. Why would someone take pride in pretending to be one of a group of folks who fought to defend the institution of slavery??

It would almost be on par to people dressing up and re-enacting Hitler's Third Reich.
I blame the Senator primarily because I assume he and his cohorts hosted this event, not those poor trifling Negroes.

If you host a bachelor party and pay some scandalous strippers to hide various fruits and vegetables inside their body orifices, the person throwing the party carries most of the responsibility for the debauchery that takes place, IMO.

The deep SOuth is caught up in some fucced up, alternate reality, worm hole, time warp.

My week isn't complete until flame calls me a coon lol. First off its a crime to dress like a Nazi in Germany and the holocaust happened there not here. And I'm not concerned with what they do I'm concerned with our people being so easily distracted. By our people I mean Americans not just blacks. We have much more important shit to focus on. Flame what are doing to help young bm get ahead outside of complaining like a five year old girl. Go!

I volunteer and I just gave up a good job to go back to school so I can teach these young kids but why are you so concerned with what other groups do? So what if jews wouldn't do it? And that makes the arguement that its the fault of the black guys not the senator.
