Her new cover in Elle was up on MTO and a lot of the posters were against her being portrayed as the beauty for BW. I think most of them were sistas saying this.
When they do put a BW on the cover, its the worst representation. There are plenty good looking BW actresses/models, but they don't use them.
In the same token TV and especially movies mostly use good-looking black women who are at times closer to white in appearance. (Because they're of mixed heritage). Let them complain about those extremes. But they won't because the dirty little (non)secret is that black women deep down prefer to be seen on screen as lightskined and long hair than they do as darkskinned and kinky hair. And when you add "overweight" to the equation as you do with Gabby (minus the kinky hair of course) they really start to get uncomfortable. I like the fact that Gabby is getting roles. I don't like the PC brigade that is trying to pass her off as a some kind of beauty. She is the female version of Biggie Smalls for goodness sakes. Not every actress has to be stunningly beautiful.
The dude has an impressive physique. He's a taller, more well built, younger-looking Daryl Mitchell....before the wheel chair of course. That's it. Not bad when you compare him to some guys in the real world but not the type that will become a breakout sex symbol. And we need young black male actors who qualify as bonafide sex symbols if we are to create new black male stars.
They're all falling for the media's agenda; being under the impression that Gab is somehow a good role model for heavyset women (regardless of race) pushing the traditional fashion standard. No she's not, she looks absolutely ridiculous. I feel embarrassed looking at her pictures, she's obese. She was too big to fit on the magazine cover. She's not even a beautiful big woman, like Queen Latifah. Now that Halle Berry is aging they have to pick a new Black Beauty (TM) and they seem to have chosen her for this year. What a joke. The worst part is that she seems to have no intention of losing weight, and the media push will only make her and her fanbase think its okay to be that large. Even Monique (who is not bad looking) lost weight. I had to go and look at a picture of Kerry Washington cleanse my sore eyes, yuck. I disagree. None of the black female TV characters over the years were close to white looking IMO, nor had mixed heritage. 21 Jump Street Saved By The Bell Boy Meets World Clueless
I have no clue how she made it on the cover of Elle seeing as how they have never had a BW on the cover.
im just saying..all these beautiful sistas that are talented and work hard to maintain their appearance...they just get bumped over as if this is representative of our community SMDH
She's just hideous! You have to ask if all the progress Blacks made in entertainment have been wasted? Shit, it might as well be 1940 with Precious representing ALL BW and with the shit Tyler Perry comes out with.
I don't think Tyler Perry's stuff is particularly bad. Lets face it, if it wasn't for Perry, many black actors and actresses would be out of work. I did a brief search, Naomi Campbell and Rihanna were on the cover earlier this year. Beyonce has been on the cover 4 times (Rihanna twice) possibly more, so I presume she's the token. Not sure who this is. Apparently Sudanese model Alek Wek was the first black model to appear on Elle magazine in 1997. However, that doesn't necessarily mean she is the first bw in general to be on the cover. I'll have to look deeper than that.
Xo all women can be beautiful you're just being biased against big girls. Their beauty needs to be celebrated too. (Dripping with sarcasm)
Someone did her a disservice by not giving her a decent hair fix that day. What editor would approve a pic for their cover where the person's hair looks like it's been run over by a car. I feel bad for her.
