I lived in Chicago until 2004. You must be doing something wrong. I had luck from Naperville to Lincoln Park to Arlington Heights and beyond. Holy hell, downtown Chicago was WW gold. Especially if you ride Metra.

I went to Northwestern University. I agree with you that Chicago is tricky - but, it's a corporate culture. If you hang out with the after work crowd downtown, and show that you are a business professional - eventually, you will intersect a social circle. After people see you're not the "stereotype," it get's easier.
