Heh, its funny something similar happened about a fortnight ago. I was talking with this (black) lady at a shop in Washington, very nice and courteous. I was looking to size up a photo frame of a family portrait and she asked to see the picture in particular. I brought it out, she saw my wife and daughters and all of a sudden, her grace and warmth vanished. She didn't exactly stop being nice, but I could sense a swift coldness and indignation in her. She then said to me, and I quote, "A good brotha like you could have gotten a gorgeous sista to have those beautiful kids, but you had to choose a white woman." (Never mind the fact that my wife is a fair skinned Dominican mestizo, but perception is reality I guess ).

I really didn't know what to say or do. I mean, it's not the worst remark about my wife or family I've heard, but a part of me really takes umbrage at people even hinting at what they feel is the appropriate choice of a partner for me, particularly when they are not kinsmen. I just gave her a nice smile when we were through, told her to have a nice day and left.

I feel as Americans, we are far too hung up on race to a poisonous degree. Now undoubtedly, I am not naive enough to ignore the contentious nature in which race relations has established itself in the United States, particularly with the context of slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings and so many other dark vertiges of our history. But there comes a certain point in which we have to make a concerted effort to get with the times. I really do empathize with many black women (particularly the single ones) who feel a sense of betrayal when they see a black man with so many admirable qualities, one who could make the parents proud stroll around with a non-black woman. I also understand the pain that interracial relationships have caused to so many, to refuse to acknowledge this flies in the face of wisdom. But the inconvenient truth is that we are mere individuals, we have to do what's right for us. If I, as a black man, decide to marry a white woman, or a black woman decides to marry an Hispanic man, whose business is it?

At the end of the day, that's what it all comes down to if i'm honest.

 

ive been saying this for the longest. When a good brotha (you know, the type that tries to do good in his life, settle down, be a family type brah) mixes it up with ANYTHING non-black, the sistas get heated. Don't let the broad be white either or you're going to get the ice-grill, evil eye, and the screwface combo all-in-1.

on a side note, i said this before, but even the Latinas were behaving like 'sistas' when brothas were going with white girls in my school, lol

I really do feel for them sometimes because they are the most likely to remain single but that's all culture and bad choices and then I stop caring. Besides I don't see why they can't date outside of the race themselves. The more biracial kids the better it is for human beings period.

on a side note, i can NOT remember the last time a white girl made fun of me for being 'corny' or square in high school or college, but I CAN remember many times a black girl did. Even as a jock, I was more inclined to be with someone non-black because I didn't look and behave like the other black guys.
