Young Women Learn, Earn More Than Young Men

After years of earning less than their male counterparts, some American women are catching up to and even overtaking men in terms of how much they earn, but only some of them, a study shows. They are single women in their 20s without children, who live in large cities and work full-time, according to a report by Reach Advisors, a New York-based strategy and research firm focused on emerging shifts in the consumer landscape.

Those young women earn on average eight percent more than men in their age group, but in some cities, like Atlanta in Georgia and Memphis, Tennessee, women earn around a fifth more than men, according to Reach Advisors' analysis of Census Bureau data. On average, American women who work full-time earn about 80 percent of what men earn.

The report says that one reason young, single women are overtaking men in terms of earnings is because girls are "going to college in droves." Nearly three-quarters of girls who complete high school go on to university, compared to only two-thirds of boys. Women are one-and-a-half times more likely than men to graduate from university and to obtain a masters degree or higher, the report says. Census data released in April showed that women overtook men in terms of holding advanced degrees in 2000, with 58 percent of all US master's degrees or PhDs awarded to women.

These folks are getting advanced degrees in Communication, Marketing, Business Administration, Human Resources, and Social Work. As a Professional Engineer, I don't find it all that impressive. Not only that, but when did it take a Masters Degree in Economics to say, "please fill out form 1099-G?"

There cannot seriously be that many women who don't pay for dates in the world? I don't have any problem splitting the bill, or footing the bill if I've got more disposable income than a guy does, and I know I'm not the only woman who feels that way.

 

I've been treated by my past ladyloves more than our going Dutch or *my* exclusively footing the bill *combined!*

Mind you, we ARE talking about European (Non-Stateside) gals, of course..

Thank you, but I still thinks it's ridiculous for any able-bodied adult to expect another person to take care of them. I'd like to know where they get that idea? Are they raised with a 'you just have to get by till you can snag a man to take care of you' mentality? If so that's just damn sad!

 

Sadly, that puerile attitude is *more common* in this society than a Stop Sign/Traffic Signal at every intersection...

Well that's just wrong. Why any parent would want to raise a child to be anything other than as self-sufficient as possible is beyond me. I object to the freeloader mentality, I'm sure not going to raise my kid to be one. :smt011

Some of it mighta rubbed off on her daughter, as well (back then, anyway..)

She wrote to us once, that her new fiancee gave her the 'biggest, most expensive ring know to man'...and that 'he is dedicated his life to making ME happy'..

She went on to marry someone else years later...they're still together..with kids...and, fortunately, it's no longer all about 'her'...

Well it kind of seems to be the overwhelming attitude of US women look at dating shows or dating in popular media it all comes down to men fawning over women and treating them to expensive dates.

 

Well y'all need to stop that then, don't enable the lazy idiots and maybe they'll figure out that they need to pay their own way.

 

If I don't someone will and all I'll get is a bunch of lonely Friday nights. Its the fame unfortunately.

 

Pretty much. A LOT of women (not all of course) in the United States have big time self entitlement issues. Especially women in their 20s.

 

Exactly! But there are a lot of men dumb enough to go along with it so can you really blame them? It just kills it for good women out there.
