Judge in sex scandal faces $67M lawsuit

WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg man who claims his former lawyer repeatedly harassed him to have sex with his wife, now a prominent Queen's Bench justice, filed a $67-million lawsuit against the couple and their former law firm Wednesday.



The suit was filed just hours before Justice Lori Douglas, the woman at the centre of this lurid scandal, provisionally relinquished her duties on the bench.



"Douglas has requested to be temporarily relieved of her duties as a sitting judge of the Court of Queen's Bench and will remain in her position in an administrative capacity until the pending complaint before the Canadian Judicial Council has been dealt with by that organization," said Queen's Bench Chief Justice Marc Monnin in a written statement.



The multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by Alex Chapman, 44, names lawyer Douglas, her husband Jack King, and the law firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman.



Chapman filed his suit without the aid of a lawyer.
"I don't think there is a lawyer in this city I can trust," Chapman said.


Chapman claims he was going through a messy divorce in April 2003 when King, his lawyer at the time, started pressuring him to have sex with his wife, Douglas.



At the time, both King and Douglas were lawyers with Thompson Dorfman Sweatman.



Chapman said he met King and Douglas two times for drinks but never had sex with with Douglas. Chapman said there was no discussion of sex in Douglas' presence.



Chapman said King e-mailed him several times about the proposed affair and sent him nude pictures of Douglas.



He also directed Chapman to an interracial sex website which included pictures of Douglas.



Chapman said he put King off until the conclusion of his divorce case, then hired another lawyer "to make him go away."



King's lawyer, Bill Gange, said that explanation doesn't wash.
Gange said Chapman's divorce was already finalized when the "inappropriate conversations" took place.



"For Mr. Chapman to say he felt pressured, everything had already been completed," Gange said, adding Chapman called King weeks later to handle a contempt motion.



"If he felt so pressured, why was he going back?"



Chapman was paid $25,000 and signed a confidentiality agreement which included a promise to destroy all correspondence and pictures he received from King.



The agreement includes a proviso Chapman repay King the money if he breaches it.



"Did I breach the confidentiality agreement? That is up for the system to decide," Chapman said.



Gange said there is no question Chapman breached the agreement, as well as the Privacy Act.



"(Chapman) had no right to those documents" and no right to distribute them to the media, he said.



In the past decade, Chapman filed two lawsuits against city police arising out of domestic incidents. One resulted in a settlement and the other is still before the court.

 

Probably irrelevant to the above case but the accuser was convicted of arson here in the 90s and I believe shortly after he served his time he changed his name from Lenard Quaccoo to Alex Chapman. Anyway, although I don't doubt his story to some extent, I think it's an insane amount of money he's suing for when all the lawyer did was offer his wife generously.

 

Even if the his story is true and it goes to court, because of his record the jury will not go in his favor.
