I have a feeling this thread should really be titled "who made the worst remakes"... That Alien Ant Farm bullshit was ridiculous. What a way to murder a good song. Remakes are rarely an improvement on the original.

Let's be fair to aaf. Micheal is a hard act to follow!

Exactly! And I think it was so popular because a lot of teeny bopper kids didn't even realise it was a cover.

The majority of the time that does seem to be the case. There are a couple though that are vast improvements over the original IMO. Seether's remake of George Michael's Careless Whisper comes to mind off the top of my head. I didn't really care for Michael's version, but I loved Seether's. Whereas that Glee remake of Journey's Don't stop believin' is pure garbage to me.

In Glee I have, seriously they really screwed up that song IMO. If you'd never heard Journey it might be different, but once you have it just ruins it for you.

Lauren Hill's remake of Killing Me Softly was like that too, it was pretty good on it's own, but if you've heard Roberta Flack nothing can top her IMO.

Miriah Carey's remake of Without You is another that was well done, but her remake of Foreigner's I Want to Know What Love Is fell short. Same thing applies, once you've heard and liked Foreigner, Miriah just comes up short.

It's hilarious. Not many TV shows make me laugh out-loud, but Glee is one of them. The characters are brilliant.

yea that show just didn't mix well with me. I think the only good person on there is the 6 feet tall blond woman.

I've heard Glee is a great show, I just happen to not like that particular remake, I don't think it's them though as I doubt I'd like it by anyone else. I think there are just some songs that really aren't well suited for remakes in general because no one will ever surpass the orginal artist, and some songs are just irrevocably tied to the original artist. Anything from Michael Jackson for instance, should just be left alone, same with Whitney Houston (back when she could actually still sing), Barry White, Martina McBride, Alison Kraus, Josh Groban, Collin Raye, Roberta Flack, Nina Simone (though Felix da Housecat did really well on Sinnerman, his mix is great, but her vocals are better), Journey, Foreigner, Kansas, well pretty much any of the 70s rock bands IMO cannot be made better, as there's just really no room for improvement. If you can't improve then what's the point? Very rarely are two versions different but equally good. Turn the Page by Bob Seger is one of those rare exceptions, I like the Seger version, but I love the Metallica version. They're different, but both good in their own way.

You know though, country music has a better track record on remakes it seems. I find that with country I often like both versions on their own merits. For instance You Were Always on My Mind by Elvis was remade by Willie Nelson, and I like both equally as well. Alison Kraus does some excellent remakes, Ghost in This House, and When You Say Nothing At All are excellent. Eric Heatherly remade Flowers on the Wall and it was great, the Statler Brother's version was used in Pulp Fiction. It has a really 'hillbilly' feel with the Statler's to me, but is much less so with Heatherly, though it's still a campy song, it was much improved. Perhaps because with country there isn't as much variation in style from artist to artist, so the remakes remain similar to the originals just with a different voice.

so far the best remakes i can think of the top was the 3 prince's song. nothing compares to you, do me baby and feel for you

Prince is another who is tough to beat for me. The list of artists like that is long, too many to think of or mention, I just glanced at my playlists and pulled the obvious ones, but there are probably literally hundreds more. Music though is subjective, what appeals to me won't appeal to everyone, it's a matter of taste.

yeah the ones that i mentioned were hot. oh yeah then there is the remake "kiss" . it wasnt as good as prince but it was cool.

I agree with you it would be nearly impossible to do a remake of mj. Now man in the mirror is a remake from saedatta garrett ( I know I spelled her name wrong). she actually wrote the song and has her original up on her site. it is good. it is in accoustics

pick out your fav song from prince because the ones I know suck. I'm not against not liking his music(even though he is very odd in style).
