Lack of Quality African American television comedies

Back in the day there was The Cosby show, A different world(My favorite, it showed Black ppl in a university setting), Fresh prince of bel-air and the Hughleys. These are the ones where you pick things up and educated you on some things.

Then there was Steve harvey show, Jamie Foxx show, Martin, Living single, Malcolm & Eddie, etc which were just laugh out loud hilarious.


Nowadays what is there. House of Payne? save me that bullshit.

I'm not even an avid tv watcher like I was back in the day. There just seems to be nothing of quality like back in the day.

When I am watching TV comedies(ones with a laugh track), I find myself watching How I met your mother, Big Bang theory, reruns of Everybody loves Raymond and King of Queens

 

there aren't as many quality shows because more African-Americans are going to the universities, working the jobs, or otherwise doing things that keep them out of the house.



it's a double edged sword. On one hand, it's good to see a plethora of shows, but on the other hand, it's a reminder that we're a bunch of couch-potatos, caught up in fictional lives instead of charging forth in our own destinies.

 

What about Meet The Browns?

 

Any tyler perry tv production is not good quality. I mean can you compare House of payne and Meet the browns to some of the shows I listed. Those were classics in the black community.

 

I want to go through this collection of shows you hav ementioned and compared them to the word quality.

Everything except the hughelys was quality. Unrealistic but quality.

The hughelys was very bad. They had the father constantly berating the son. That was not cool and helpful to the black community especially little black boys.

Steve Harvey sucks. If he was a teacher, he would have long been fired for the way he treats the children. Jamie Foxx sucks as well. The rest were ok. I simply don't like those two people. Horrible examples of quality in tv shows and men. The Cosby show remains to be the standard in black family tv shows while a different world remains to be the standard in the black college life. If you get time, you should look for a show called somebodies. BET canceled it. It was a more modern version of life in universities.

Family matters might be the only show to rival the cosby show. In my book, they are number one but I am completely bias. There is also chris rock's show which was hilarious as heck. The bernie mack show which was too dark.

You are correct though. Most of the shows suck. If it has the name Tyler Perry, you know it is going to suck.

 

What the hughleys was great. They need to bring back a show like that. he talked alot about race in a funny way. Yeah he berated the child so what, not meant to be taken to seriously where you'd protest. That kid was such a wise ass. It especially dicsussed the sell-out aspect in the black community. Living in the suburbs, having alot of white people in your circle, etc

Steve harvey show not funny? Whoa man, and Jamie foxx show? wow you must be into really high brow comedy or something.

i forgot Family matters, another classic and Bernie mac show was so so, you really have to get into Bernie mac's standup to enjoy that show.

Don't forget My Wife and Kids. I used to watch that every day after school.

 

All the shows Raul listed are funny as fuck. I actually just downloaded some seasons of Malcolm and Eddie, Jamie Foxx Show, and the Wayans Bros(He missed that one). After Girlfriends and Eve went off, there was nothing but Tyler Perry shit and a couple other bullshit shows. Martin is probably my favorite black show. Second is One on One. Third is Fresh Prince.



I just say fuck black sitcoms and watch Curb your Enthusiasm. Larry David is fucking hilarious.

Steve Harvey was below standard but watchable. jamie foxx show sucked along with the wayans. I wish in living color stayed on but when the original cast left it was no reason to watch. jamie fox was the only one hold the show together and he was sucking wind.

My wife and kids were great. DL cried because he stated that MWAK were a rip off. all i can say is " BOOO hooo"

bernie mack and chris rock were the best shows in the last 15 years. they were creative and outside the box. I loved eddie murphy's the P.J's

Yeah..thanks everyone for mentioning more. I forgot Family Matters, Wayans Bros(how i could forget this show is beyond me, I watched it religiously lol), Bernie Mac show(an acquired taste for some, yet still funny), and probably still more. There was all these great shows and then Black comedies just fell off past 2001.

Whikle is right My wife and kids was okay somewhat, then there was Eve, One on one, Girlfriends, Half and half, Cuts, and the Game(still airing on BET) Basically any show on UPN at the time. Those shows were so so. Some of you either hated it or tolerated it. Everybody hates chris is another acquired taste.

I didn't mention Boondocks because it is animated, though up there in one of the greats if this was the last season.

I'm glad I was raised in the era that I was in.

Although, it's not imperative we have these kinds of shows while growing up, I really appreciate those times and the memories.


So many television classics came out at that point. Nowadays, its a bunch of drama series shows or reality TV.

Nowadays, the shows that still follow a similar format to the ones listed in this thread are still aired on CBS or maybe Fox but I don't watch any of those shows ever, nor the networks their broadcast on.

Black women will always be hating on Taye diggs. He and Blair Underwood, have been officially ex-communicated from the Black community by BW. Aww well WW have accepted them with open arms and are now going to be there core demographics

I believe he's done alot of tv and film projects with White female counterparts. LAX was the most recent that comes to mind and also his appearance on "New adventures of old Christine"
