Ok I guess I have to address you and the peanut gallery. I said that building a Mosque there was poor taste not that it shouldn't be done like if I called you an "infantile cocksucker" that would be in poor taste but within my rights. Just like the Dr. Laura thing, it was purely poor taste but within her right. I don't see how I was being contradictory.
The Mosque thing doesn't involve freedom of speech, that'd be freedom of religion IMO, though both are First Amendment issues. However from reading that thread most people against it aren't in favor of restricting freedom of religion or freedom of speech, they just think it's upsetting/inflammatory to other people. As for Dr. Laura, as you know I'm big on freedom of speech, and though I don't like what she said at all, I can see that under the First Amendment it is her right to say it. If she worked for me I personally would have fired her, not because of what she said but because IMO it clearly shows she's a racist and I wouldn't have a racist on my payroll... now of course she'd probably sue me for infringing on her constitutional rights, but so be it. That's likely why they didn't fire her, and instead she quit. I really don't have an issue with people pulling sponsorship from her show, or listeners choosing to no longer tune in, both would eventually lead to her show being canceled because in the end it's always about the money. I think she just hastened the process in an attempt to salvage some of her tattered reputation. Personally I always thought she was a ignorant cow, now I'm sure of it.
Why is it upsetting or inflammatory to other people? That's what I am not understanding. It has no relation but religion to the terrorist.
You know as I'm reading your comment I guess to me 9/11 is like the oil spill thing down where you are. That might be a something you or others down there are more passionate about since you saw the effects first hand. It literally touched the lives of most people down there but to me its kind of a "it happened over there" mentality so I guess that's why it might be hard to no understand the passion some might feel about the 9/11 attacks and a Mosque being built there
It's not to me. But clearly it is to some folks. I think Karma articulated it best in that thread when he said nothing should be built there... a lot of people seem to feel that way. I think human beings tend to be sentimental, to ascribe or tie emotions to things. Personally I lack the ability to be sentimental or to take offense from an object or symbol, but the concept of symbolism is not lost on me. Just because I don't see in it what some people do, doesn't mean I cannot appreciate that it holds a vastly different meaning to them. The issue seems to be concern over anti-Muslim sentiment? I can assure you that's not how I feel, I don't blame all Muslim for 9/11 anymore than I blame all Christians for all the atrocities that have been committed throughout the ages in the name of the God that I worship. People will always find a way to sell their hate to the masses, and religion has always proven to be effective for that... which is completely asinine as I know of no religion that teaches hate. But back to the point, it's not an anti-Muslim thing for everyone, for some it's simply the desire to minimize the unpleasantness for the people who are bothered... and yes I'm sure some of those people that are bothered are anti-Muslim, however they aren't the ones that I'm sorry for. I think that there are many who would prefer to erase the memory of 9/11, for some it is the worst day of their lives, and things like this just push it to the forefront and force them to relive it all over again. I think that's why some oppose the Mosque, and everything else connected with Ground Zero, they just don't want to think about it, and this gives them no choice.
Even though the oil spill happened, I don't see many people complaining that other oil companies are building stores. That's what confuses me. I can understand if bin laden was building it. Hell yeah, complain like crazy. In this situation, the guy has no connection but religion that I know of. just like citigo has no connections to BP but oil. sure go ahead and boycott bp but why boycott citigo. They weren't responsible for bp's mess.
But if another oil company decided to build another off shore drilling station there would be people up in arms about it. Even though they might not have been the company who caused the spill. We are emotional creatures my friend.
I don't think that would be the case almost 9 years later and a 13 trillion debt. The suspension of drilling will be up by 2011. There will be oil companies right back in the gulf with little to no coverage. And we are so emotional that the BP still continues to work in the gulf coast and will get the oil in the gulf of Mexico. People forget real quick. How much news have you seen on BP compared to this event at this moment? If something else comes up, this mosque will be forgotten even if they don't move it. Election time is right around the corner. I bet this mosque business will die down while they are counting up on who won the election night.
I don't get Free Speech as an issue here. The government did not step in and fire Dr Laura. She has every right to set up a podcast in her home or a youtube channel and continue to spew her crap as long as she wants. But the First Amendment does not guarantee you lots of money from sponsors. This is a recession, and there's absolutely no reason for a business to waste piles of cash on a toxic witch who will taint their brand. If you advertise on a show, and the content of that show suddenly changes in such a way as to make your advertising spot worthless -- or worse than that -- than you should have the right to cancel your advertising contract and purchase elsewhere. She will probably go on to work for Fox, where rampant hatred is acceptable to their current sponsors.
Your opinions are contradictory because your opposition to the mosque was based purely out of deference to the feelings of anyone who is so upset by 9/11 that they consider any display of the Islamic faith in close proximity to Ground Zero to be highly offensive. It's true that you never said the people behind the construction of the mosque should be forced to abandon the project, you did repeatedly state that the feelings of others were basis enough for them to forgo exercising their first amendment rights. In this thread, you railed against "hypersensitivity" (hurt feelings) and the purported harm that they're doing to free speech in this country. If you were really "just tired of people being so sensative(sic) about everything" as you wrote earlier in this thread, you should have supported the community center instead of berating it's backers for not considering the feelings of others, which, in this case, are totally irrational. As I stated earlier, protected speech isn't an issue at all in this story. Dr. Laura had every right to go on a tirade about her opinions on race relations in this country and her contempt for Black people on her radio show. Correspondingly, I have every right to call her a bitter, condescending shrew and a racist. Finally, her erstwhile sponsors had every right to pull their ads from her program because they were no longer comfortable having their products associated with her. I'm short on time tonight, but I'll be back tomorrow to see if you can muster up a coherent defense/rationalization for your inconsistent opinions on how much deference should be paid to the feelings of others without using anymore ad hominems.
Exactly! Not really an "apology", now she's whining about 1st Ammendment/Free Speech. She's pissed she can't be racist/homophobic/hateful, etc. without reprecussions.
Raocha my point is and has always been respect and common sense. Building a Mosque would do more harm than good. I'm sorry I can't explain it any further but honestly you're like a small child who has to constantly ask why with no satisfaction. So again I'm agreeing to disagree sir.
As for myself and the ONE or TWO others with African Ancestry in this thread, this is clearly a race-baiting and inflammatory thread to allow you to post the N-word within the context of this forum.
