Since there isn't a "Health & Wellness" section for a thread like this, I kinda sorta mebbe figure this fiefdom will hafta do...

For Some Time Now, I've been looking at the table of ingredients in the basic, average pouch of what is colloquially known as "junk food"..

For instance, in a sack of Doritos...from which the ingredients list I clipped off and have in my little envelope of production projects & such....(Don't ask!)

Upon perusing, I see that amongst the things used to make this fine culinary concoction are:

    Disodium Phosphate

Natural and Artificial Flavour (It's ascrtained that "Natural Flavour" does NOT come from "nature"...but IS created in a lab!)

    Sodium Caseinate

    Disodium Inosinate

    Disodium Guanylate

and .. the BANE of MANY food allergies...

    Monosodium Glutamate

    Yep, the dreaded "MSG"!

And then there's the 'more healhier' Chex Mix

    in which can be found:

    Distilled Monoglycerides

    Calcium Carbonate

Trisodium Phosphate (Not MONOsodium, or BIsodium...but TRIsodium! What, it's gotta come in THREES to serve your purpose?!?)

    Hydrolysed Soy Protein

    with Freshness preserved by BHT

I've always been intrigued by this BHT thing...as a kid it always sounded more like a chemical compound more appropriate for committing chemical warfare....just ome of my random musings as a kid. LOL!

No, but seriously....I *do* wonder IF the combinations of these additives....and the cumulative effect thereof....just MIGHT be one of the mitigating factors conducive to the rise in alot of the maladies that many of the General Populace seems to nowadays suffer from? Including various & sundry malignancies?

And notice the advisories/warnings on all of these nowadays regarding the (for the most part) organic stuff:

Contains Milk, Wheat, Nut, and Soy Ingredients (amongst others)

NOT the laboratory cultivated/created material....but the ORGANIC goodies!

    Go figure.

    Just curious about it all.......

For the record, I don't do alot of these snacks on a regular basis. Last time I had a super king-size bag of Doritos, I spent three days tryin' to choke the stuff down. I just don't have the taste fer it anymore...

And yeah.....I'm FULLY AWARE that the exclusion of any of this from anyone's diet is NOT gonna make anyone 'immortal'....

    Remember...

    Eat Right, Excercise..DIE ANYWAY!

yeah there is, it's called Fashion and Fitness.

Fitness is usually synonymous with 'health and well-being,' unless you are somehow into one but not into the other.

    :smt026

unless you're a slacker who doesn't like to exercise.....

    :p

well i dont think ill live to be 100....actually i seriously hope i dont, because i'll be too damn depressed, lol. When I workout, im more concerned about athletic goals and personal appearance. I like sports and keeping in shape when your not playing, is just as important as staying in shape while you play. Longevity is just a side-benefit to me.

    lol

some people do have obsessions with being 'healthy,' like they really think they can outrun Death himself.

I just like being athletic and having that extra toughness you develop, with hard-work and dedication. I'm not cocky about it tho....I don't walk around ready to jack someone for giving me the evil eye.

I'm aware of what's good and bad for me, but I have been thinking more consciously about what I'm putting into my system more now than I ever have. I try and do things in moderation anyway, but still, the ingredients can be shocking once you know what you're really scarfing down.

This is why I'm a bit of a "box reader". I like to read through the ingredients and nutrition table on food before I buy it. Even if it doesn't steer me away from the item I like being better informed about what I eat, and vicariously what my man eats. He'll pretty much eat whatever I set in front of him, so I like to try and make it as healthy as I can, as often as I can, since it seems the responsibility falls on me to regulate what we eat. lol

Though I will never deny him his pudding snacks. lol He eats them in moderation anyhow!

We've been trying to remove, or at least lessen, the amount of bad stuff we ingest. Like for the past few months we've only bought bottled water and juice, instead of soda and stuff. And when I buy juice I refuse to purchase anything that is less that 100 percent, because it's kinda defeating the purpose to just chug down all this "10 percent real fruit juice drink" crap. I have to make sure I read the labels -very- carefully on any juice because they write it reeeeally tiny. I'd rather make my own juice, honestly, but I have yet to get a juicer (though I'd love one! hah)

We bought a bag of tortilla chips (the plain ones) recently for the first time in...wow, I can't even remember the last time we got any. So it was a nice treat to have some chips and queso. :D

I think our biggest problem is the pizza at school. It's rather delicious, cheap, and definitely an easy option when we're running too late to have breakfast, or are stuck at school too long to go home and eat. I used to go for the salads, but with all the crap they put on them (and the dressing) they're like as fattening as the pizza is at triple the price (almost 6 bucks for some damn lettuce and veggies with mounds of cheese and meat?!). Don't get me wrong, the chicken caesar salad is delicious, but there's no way all the fresh Parmesan they put on there is healthy. I'm pretty sure they put more cheese on the salad than is on the pizza.
