lol :smt011 What amendment protects the right again? Here is the thing. They have the right from the same amendment that you have a right to disagree or agree. People do show their lack of tolerance towards religions when they disagree with this case. They have a right to do it and that is all. They have no connection shown other then their religion to the terrorist of 9/11. It is not fair to say well you can build a Christian or Jewish building and not a muslim one.
Am I speaking a foreign language? I mean, really. 2 posters that I respect are putting words in my mouth. Let me put it plainly: If I were a politician in the city/state of NY, I would NOT deny them their right to build the community center/mosque. But it is in my right to not LIKE that decision. I'm out of here. I'm tired of people calling me a bigot and putting words in my mouth. I'm right now in a "I want to tell everyone to f**k off" mood.
WHY? These people don't live and work in that neighborhood? There weren't Muslims who died in the WTC like everyone else? There's a four block perimeter around Ground Zero which demarcates the difference between the non-reaction to the extant mosque that's been in that neighborhood for almost half a century and the outrage burning with the fire of a thousand suns directed at this new community center? Seriously, what THE FUCK is the problem if you don't blame all Muslims for the attacks and don't think that they don't count the same as every other American? If you do, I understand why you think that it's inappropriate. I don't agree, but I understand. And yeah, you're entitled to that opinion. I certainly don't have the right to say that anyone can't think what they want to. The reason I keep harping on this issue is because I seriously don't understand how anyone can claim with a straight face that the supposed offense being committed against the memory of the 9/11 victims with the construction of this building isn't based on the notion that is Islam itself is responsible for the terrorist attacks or that people who believe that the entire religion is to blame should be appeased with the blockage of its construction.
Yeah yeah. Discriminatin ass muthaphukkas...lol It's not THAT serious... :smt078 If people don't want to answer common sense questions that's fine.
be careful what you wish for you may get a response to your query that you didn't want people's gettin really rowdy over this topic
I understand this point but why is it that they get this criticism of why build it when it will give so many problems. If it was a Christian church or any other building, would you have said this point? It is an unfair point. There have been times in this country's history where people exercising their rights would cause trouble to both them and the other side. One example is of the little rock nine. One could easily say why send children to a majority white school when it will cause so many problems for so many. Arkansas is huge and there are plenty of black schools that those black children could go to. Why send them to Little Rock Central High School where it will get much negative attention? It makes it seem like the kids going to that school are starting problems. Someone back in that time could have made that argument to the little rock nine. It isn't a valid argument to say you are going to bring trouble for yourself or others if you exercise your right. It will only make people feel like they shouldn't exercise their rights to make people feel comfortable. I say get them uncomfortable. Final note: I was not accusing Bookworm of bigotry. I just didn't agree with the idea of not exercising your right just because it will cause problems for you or the other side which is from that quote that bookworm quoted.
I'm sure I'll be ok. It's not like I'm getting my palm read or getting my future read by a fortune teller. It's just a message board talking to a bunch of people I don't know about a topic that doesn't mean much to me. Lol*
I think it's pretty damn nasty how Old Books has been jumped on here, I think sometimes people on here take too much of an analytical view of things and don't regard peoples feelings/emotion in situations such as this. Yes I think people should be able to build where they want to, I don't disagree at all with that, but can you stop people FEELING that they shouldn't build there, no, people are people and they hold grudges that's the nature of people, if I had lost someone close to me, I would feel the personal indecency of what it symbolises. Maybe If I had lost relatives or friends in 7/7 I'd have a more negative view, my Dad and Brother were working in London that day, parking in E London and using the Tube to get into central but luckily enough they had made there journey over an hour previous, but it still didn't stop me being concerned, I was at home that day and soon as the TV broke the news I was on the phone trying to contact them, which actually ended up taking hours because the Mobiles were blocked probably because everyone else was doing the same thing. If thing's had been different, damn right I'd feel negative because forgive and forget is what happens in the playground not when you steal a friend/family members life, yes it's unfair! but if you get bitten by the same breed of Dog twice, your not so keen to approach a third time. Call me a Bigot I don't care I'm not of an Altruistic nature, so whatever.
I agree that if this hadn't been so well publicized in the media, most likely people wouldn't have had such a negative reaction to it, but that's kinda obvious... it's difficult to dispute something you are unaware of. However, calling Bookie a bigot is simply not appropriate. At no point did she express such sentiment Raocha. Saying you can understand why some people would be upset though you don't necessarily agree with them, is not bigotry, it's empathy. I personally have no issue with a mosque being built anywhere, Muslims weren't responsible for 9/11, idiots were and idiocy knows no religion, it's an equal opportunity state of mind. However, I can see how it would bother some people, and not being from NYC I don't feel like I should really voice a strong opinion either way. So looks like I'm joining Bookie in the bigot camp... so be it, at least I'll be in good company with her and Drae.
I completly agree with you. for sure. He put himself into a trap, with situation that has ramifications either way, why weigh in on an issue like that, especially when you do have bigger fish to fry as Unchosen would say...he needs to look out for himself, and that mean staying out the line of fire for mid-terms. I agree to certain extent...nnow you open the door for fools and idiots.
a gay bar, a military-themed club (chock full of boasting servicemen), or a hooters, complete with women bits bursting at the seams.. FTW
Excellent points all around man. Obama is in over his head and it doesnt help that he has surrounded himself with dipshits either.
