Here's something we never thought we'd see...though I've oft times heard of the goodies in the can from these guys...

    The MYNAH BIRDS

    A freewheeling Rock-And-Roll Ensemble, Featuring:

    GOLDIE McJOHN
    BRUCE PALMER
    NEIL YOUNG
    and
    RICK JAMES(!)

These blokes got together in Canada when Rick James was AWOL from the military (He lied about his age to enlist in the first place). When they migrated to Detroit, they signed with MOTOWN and cut some sides for a planned LP. (12 years in advance of Rick as a solo artiste for MOTOWN) The authorities got wind of Rick's being in Michigan & caught up with him. It was MOTOWN head Berry Gordy who advised Rick to turn himself in, and the planned Minah Birds projects were never released.....until the advent of THE COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES multi-CD anthology, that is.

McJohn, Palmer & Young went on to helf STEPPENWOLF, CRAZY HORSE, & BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD...whilst JAMES eventually made his way back to MOTOWN in 1978, and the rest is history.

Here then, are 2 of the jams that The MYNAH BIRDS made for MOTOWN. With RICK on lead vocals. (Both Circa 1966)

    More FROM THE MOTOWN stable:

"Do It Right" - RARE EARTH (1976)

This may *not* be the "Rare Earth* that you are ordinarily used to hearing.

Between 1975 & 1977, things got kinda bad for the gang....the group broke up their act, lawsuits & counterlawsuits. During which time EDGAR WINTER'S WHITE TRASH vocalist & sax man JERRY LaCROIX was enlisted to fill the lead vocal void. Along with bassist REGGIE McBRIDE commandeered from STEVIE WONDER's studo sessionmen, MOTOWN session guitarist PAUL WARREN, BARRY EUGENE SMITH-FROST on drums, and some other musicians.

This, then, is Track 4, "A"-Side...from their 2nd (And final) MOTOWN album "MIDNIGHT LADY" (The tune [& 99% of the overall LP] was written & produced by The Legendary & Much Regretted NORMAN WHITFIELD)

Once again, from the FUNTASTIC WORLD of MIGHTY MOTOWN:

"It Moves Me To Tears" - The ISLEY BROTHERS

Yes, I *know* this is in the Rock Thread...but Back In The Day - I saw *LOTS* of suburban Chi-Town rockers gettin' down to this tune..

By the way, this came out well before "(Who's) THAT LADY" and "FIGHT THE POWER". The Isleys (Ronald, Rudolph, & The Much Regretted O'Kelley) were with the Berry Gordy Empire for a New York Minute. They only left because of the hostility, jealousy and rancour of their fellow MOTOWN acts...who DEMANDED to know "Why the hell do THEY get the top producers & writers (Holland-Dozier-Holland & Norman Whitfield for example) when they JUST ARRIVED to the lable? While WE have been here FAR LONGER than THEM?!?"

After all that, The ISLEYS decided to bow out of The HITSVILLE Empire and start their own company (T-Neck Record Productions) and the rest is history..

If ya *don't* find yourself dancing to this, don't call a doctor. It's too late. You're already dead..

Once again....sound familiar?.....from the happy world of MOTOWN!

"It's Too Bad" - MIKE & The MODIFIERS

The "MIKE" in question is The Much Regretted MIKE VALVANO, who came to MOTOWN in 1960, signed as an artiste, he released this doo-woppy single on the GORDY subsidiary in 1962.

A few years later, he resurfaced on another MOTOWN subsidiary, V.I.P., as part of the BEATLE-ish aping ensemble The HORNETS, with the single "GIMMEE A KISS!" - The less said about that one, the better...

He later went on to produce &/or write for fellow MOTOWN acts such as EDWIN STARR, STONEY & MEATLOAF, The RUSTIX, JIMMY RUFFIN, XIT, STEVIE WONDER, et al.

He died in Oregon, of a massive heart attack, in 2003.

One last contribution for the night...

NOT from ANY aspect of MOTOWN though--SURPRISE!

"Out! Demons, Out!" (Never before heard EXTENDED VERSION) - The EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND

Originally intended as part of the debut LP "KEEP THEM FREAKS A'ROLLIN'! (Recored Live At ABBEY ROAD Studios)" in 1968, the LP was shelved in favour of the more conventionally recorded studio LP "WASA WASA". "Out!..." was resurrected as a truncated (as in "heavily edited") 45 single in the Early 1970's.

This version, in all its FULL-LENGTH UNCUT GLORY, has finally been released...along with the rest of the "...A'ROLLIN'" cuts, on the LP originally intended for debut release..

"SLAVE" - The ROLLING STONES (From the LP "TATTOO YOU", 1981)

A fave of mine....originally on vinyl..with the advent of CD later on, even moreso....particularly considering said CD bears a LONGER version, which you are hearing here.

I *CANNOT BELIEVE* that they ACTUALLY had the GALL back then....when put to vinyl....to EDIT OUT *ANY* of KEITH RICHARDS's guitar solos AND guest SONNY ROLLINS's sax solos...and toss them on THE EDITING ROOM FLOOR!

Thank The Maker for the Digital Medium That Surpasses Analogue Vinyl - in MANY Ways!

It would appear that there are some other threads here at WWBM where the atmosphere has become....how do you say.....a tad hostile?

Soooooooooo, in hopes of one and all mellowing out...to borrow the opening line from ARTHUR CONLEY:

    DO YA LIKE GOOD MUSIC?

If so, then here's some more tidbits to groove on...and hopefully help accomplish the overall mellowing out.

    Once again...from MIGHTY MOTOWN

    "Fun House" - RARE EARTH

From the 1974 FRANK WILSON (Most renowned as EDDIE KENDRICKS's longtime producer at MOTOWN) sessions that were aborted midway through when RARE EARTH crumbled under a ton of lawsuits & counterlawsuits (more on that elsewhere, if you care to pursue seeking it..)

Anyway, this jam - not released until a 1995 CD compilation - IF it woulda been released Back In The Day...IMO....woulda blown away the band's 1971 hit "I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE" as their ALL-TIME GET-DOWN PARTY ANTHEM!

Feast yer aural receptors on it and tell us what YOU think!

"Stop Lookin' Back" - GRAND FUNK

From the 1973 LP "WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND"; Got some late-night FM radio airplay Back In The Day on my fave station back home (WLUP) .. Woulda, in all probability, been a hit single....had it been released in the 45 RPM format.

Ennyhoo, ENJOY.....and remember...in the words of Red Green:

I'm PULLIN' fer ya! WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

    CHRIS HOLMES Keyboards (1974)
