Back in the day, I occasionally ran into problems. I would join one organization or another as a volunteer, start to befriend my peers who for whatever reason were predominately White, and then eventually it would come up that my husband (then boyfriend) was Black. Sometimes people would act like I'd been some kind of spy, and would get all weird around me, like I'd been trying trick them into saying something racist the whole time they were getting to know me.

I hated that, and I eventually just stopped joining organizations where most of the people were White, unless we just joined as a couple.

;)Chi, that made me laugh and uncomfortable at the same time. I can picture you - trying to be normal like anyone else, then they find out that your husband is black - OH NO!!! Wow!

Have they ever said anything to you or started acting cold?
