Thierry Henry, one of the leading players in Europe, agreed this week to a contract with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.

Henry is of Afro-Caribbean heritage and he grew up in a Paris suburb.

The who? I live in New York, and I didn't even know that there was a major league soccer team here until I read this article.

Seriously, isn't this guy a huge star in Europe? How much could they possibly be paying him to move to the States. The recent World Cup bandwagon jumping aside, most people outside of Latin American immigrants and upper middle class suburbanites with grade school aged daughters don't give a shit about soccer in the country. I can't imagine that the expenditure made by American franchises for players like Beckham and Henry are in any way sustainable.

I wonder if he got other offers. Coming to MLS may mean that he's washed up:(

Good move for him...his best days are behind him on the pitch and as a star on the French national team. Time to display his fading skills in the last place they can be appreciated...the soccer-wasteland known as the USA.

Rough equivalent of a washed-up NBA player going to play in Europe?

I'll go see them when they play in Denver. I love Thierry. Even "washed" up will be better than alot of talent in the MLS.

    Better than most, I'm sure.

I doubt the owner of the Co. Rapids will ever spring for a desinated player. He is a Walmart heir and therefore, has more money than God but the soccer team was bought as part of a deal that included the Nuggets,Avalanche and Pepsi center.

He wasn't after this team and even admitted basketball was his love. He has even become a part owner of Arsenal and did nothing to connect the two soccer teams. Well, spoke of doing it then not.

I will just have to attend games and see the great players other teams bring on. I do think that rule is good for the league for visability and interest. Until MLS salaries improve it will never be a respected league. :(

I might go and catch one of his games if he comes to DC, or I might even go up to see him in Jersey. It's been almost four years since I saw him last, this was when he was still in Arsenal. He might be "washed up" but he's certainly still better than many of the MLS players.
