The Green Lantern Movie: Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordan

The Green Lantern was one of my favorite comics as a kid...I'm talking earliest seventies here. I can't imagine--even if they designed a clone based on the original comics--a better job of casting. Ryan Reynolds is perfect IMO.

All of these comic movies make me kinda feel like I died and went to heaven. (Geek alert, I know). Can't wait to get back from Iraq and watch it with my kids.

On a lighter note, Ryan was supposed to do a full length deadpool film, but I guess he sided with DC instead.

 

He's doing BOTH.

Deadpool will be problematic as H'wood likes their heroes faces to be visible.

Ryan would have been a way better Flash IMO right down to Wally West's wise-cracking nature. Not really feeling the EW cover/photo of GL, but we'll see. Thor looks kinda weak too while we're on the subject. But again we shall see.

 

Definitely agree with you on him being like the flash. They seem to cast these superhero movies really badly. Hallie Berry as Catwoman fail. The last superman movie fail. Hugh Jackman as wolverine fail. The batman triology after Michael Keaton and before Christian Bale fail. Hallie Berry as Storm fail. Jessica alba in the fantastic 4 fail. They need better casting directors or just let the fans vote.

 

I liked Brandon Routh as Superman he was just trapped in a horrible movie. Wolverine did $300 million despite it sucking so to them Hugh wasn't a fail.

I thought it was messed up that the ONE TIME A BLUE EYED BLOND IS CALLED FOR IN A MOVIE they hire a Latina. WTF? PC run amok.

 

Wally West is Kid Flash. Barry Allen (The Flash) has blond hair. I don't agree that Reynolds is the guy to play Flash. On the other hand, he looks just like the 70s comics version of Hal Jordan. We will see how he plays him.

 

Exactly. Ali Larter from Heroes would have been perfect for Fantastic Four. I'll give you Superman but even though Wolverine made all that money I think they could have casted him better. The Batman with Val Kilmer did well but it still sucked monkey nuts.

 

Wow I can't believe I'm gonna get nerdy right now but if you read the comics Wally West grows up and takes over from Barry Allen and succeeded by Barry's grandson who is his namesake. Besides who cares about hair color that can always be dyed. We were commenting on how Reynolds' quick sarcastic humor would fit Wally West's character.

 

Wally West is The Flash in the comics now and has been for like 25 years. He took up the mantle after Barry's death. And his hair is either brown or red according to which book you read (old Flash comics where it was brown or early issues of The New Teen Titans where he was red, respectively).

The Flash you see in the animated JLA and The Batman is Wally West.

David S. Goyer did a draft of The Flash for Warner's that fell apart. He wanted to use Ryan, so I'm not insane.

We will agree to disagree on Ryan, he's not right to me. But I'll wait to see him in action of course before I pass judgment.

So this is really a generational difference of opinion/preference. I guess it comes down to which demographic the producers are after: the people who learned about super heroes by reading the original comics as a kid, or generation x who learned through watching cartoons on TV.

I am in the former group, and I think Marvel's success has come from being true to the original comics.

 

Yup. The whole movie was miscast except my favorite the Human Torch.

 

The younger of course. To them West has ALWAYS been The Flash.

 

Marvel hasn't done it that way.

 

Not to mention they buy tickets and all other merchandising associated with the film.

 

A lot of them are getting money to do this from their parents. I know I have seen most of the Marvel flicks with my kids. I should buy Marvel stock.

Those hints at the end of the movies are aimed at the comic book readers. At the end of Iron Man I only I (not my kids) got excited at the idea that Sam Jackson would be Nick Fury.

At the end of Iron Man two, I, but not my kids, recognized the hammer to be Mjolnir, Thor's hammer.

Stan Lee has got the right formula, DC would be smart to copy. Dont' forget us old fogies.

Apparently the writer of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and all three Blade movies thought that Ryan Reynolds would be a good Flash but what does he know.

 

I was lucky to grow up with both forms of media. I loved collecting X-Men comics, and the cartoon series that aired on the Fox Network pretty much ran with the uniforms and looks, present in the comics I was reading in the 90s. In that case, it was pretty spot on.

As for Ryan, I did not know he was doing both. I was kind of disappointed with Hollywood's Deadpool, but like you said they rather their heroes faces show. I guess it's to make money off of their good looks.



I don't think Hugh Jackman was that bad of a Wolverine tho. I mean, HOW MANY GUYS DO YOU KNOW CAN PULL OFF THE WOLVIE HAIR-DO like he did?

Nah, Ben Grimm was cast perfectly by Michael Chiklis and I thought Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards was a good choice. Actually I think the cast was strong for the most part if you wanna say Alba was the weakest, yeah ok...
