Janet Jackson says there is nothing wrong with dating younger men. The 44-year-old singer-and-actress says it's her prerogative if she wants to go out with younger guys and insists an age gap shouldn't get in the way of love.

Janet, the sister to the late Michael Jackson, has recently been linked to millionaire businessman Wissam Al Mana who is almost a decade younger than her.

Speaking about the criticism that comes with having a toy boy, Janet said, "It's horrible. It's really awful. And I have to believe it was a man that started that. Mother always raised us to believe that age was just a number. All of us - my sisters, my brothers - we'll just tell you our ages because it's all about where you are mentally and how you feel about yourself."

Janet, who is the youngest of the Jackson family, believes she is more confident now then ever before. The star, who was in a seven-year relationship with music producer Jermaine Dupri, added in an interview with Essence magazine, "There comes a time when you don't give an 'F' what people say or think. You just do your thing because it's finally about you and not in a selfish way but in a great way."

Wasn't Jermaine Dupri younger than Janet too?

I remember when they were going out someone commented that it looked like Janet was taking him to school. Now I cannot un-see this image anymore. :D

Jermaine Dupri is younger. About a seven years age difference. He is 37 now.

In the black community, considering its a matriarchal society/community, an older woman dating a younger man is not frowned upon as much as it would be in, say, the white community which is much more patriarchal.

Well, that's my theory at least.

This is a damn good theory because in many ways you have a good point. The male and the female role in the black community, for the most part, is reversed which gives black females privileges in the black community that would be frowned upon in another racial community. Majority of the black American community is matriarchal.

But mature women prefer younger men for a reason.

u hit it on the head. 4 things happened to the black community to instigate that.

    1) welfare. we all know how that works
    2) feminist movement: they really thought they were a part of that but they were used.
    3) divorce.
    4) the inherent teaching that u dont need a man and men are no good

Pretty sure that's not it goodlove. I don't know about anyone else, but personally I don't want to raise a man, nor do I want to dominate anyone. In fact someone who is self-sufficient and able to use their own brain is really attractive.

I think older women find younger men attractive for several reasons. For instance men have higher sex drives at a younger age, and women's sex drives increase in their 30s and remain high for decades after that. So in that respect they are well matched. I've also personally noticed that younger men tend to be more open minded about just about everything, than men my age for example. Since I highly suspect you're going to ask me to elaborate on that, let me just offer you some examples upfront.

Men my age think women in their 40s and up should think, dress, and behave a certain way, and they aren't shy telling you about that either. They don't understand why a woman would choose to work long hours, spend time staying fit, etc. I think there's a belief that after a certain age you just don't really need to try anymore, and it apparently doesn't occur to them that maybe you just like it that way. That may just be my experience but honestly I think it's probably a generational thing as there are some women my age who agree with them. I think the gender roles have undergone considerable change in the past 5 decades and some people just haven't caught up yet.

One other thing I noticed is that this seems to apply to non-BM, as I've never met a BM of any age that had that mindset, they always appear very progressive if you will, or more open to accepting you as is rather than viewing you as a project that needs work.

Another reason why older White Women date not only younger men but younger Black Men.

That might have something to do with the fact that we're more used to adapting, rather than being catered to in this world.

    That's just my theory.
