I'm supposed to be a senior, studying Media Arts and Animation, but I'm presently stuck in financial aid purgatory.

Haha blame Tarshi and the mod, it went crazy lol. The thread was asking if there is some fellow college students on there on the board.

OMG that's horrible. Are your going to the Art Institute? Because that sounds very similar to the degree I was going to go for but I found out that for 4 years it was going to cost 95k! And my MGBILL Scholarship doesn't cover that. So I'm doing visual art through my university instead. But what happened? How did you get stuck in purgatory?

Yep. AI is a money grubbing bitch. Basically I'm trying yo find a cosigner for a loan. If I don't get the loan, they want $2000 cash. If I don't pay that, they want $10,000 for me to come back after this quarter.

So, basically, after sucking me dry of $27,000 to pay for less than two years of student housing, they want even more money to pay for the housing I don't even live in anymore. And if I don't pay, I don't finish my bachelors.

Good God, that's ridiculous! So this money they are asking for you to pay for is for student housing, but you don't stay in student housing. Is there some paperwork you can follow where you can officially decline anything related to student housing?

If not, here is a plan but it might be a long shot. There is an AI here in San Diego, and they don't have student housing, let alone require for you to pay for student housing? Do you think it would be possible for your to continue your education out here in san diego if you can't find a loan and AI won't allow you to remove yourself for paying student housing that you don't stay in?

I'm going into my fouth and final year of uni in September. I study languages. Russian, Spanish and a little Portuguese.
The finances are hitting everyone hard, eh? With out new conservative government, the loans have been decreased (grants are less common here) and I'm already struggling to find affordable accomidation. They're trying to deter working class people from going to universities, since you know, all we're good for is manual labour and can't handle higher education ;)

I'm somewhat lucky because this government wants to get rid of capped fees and allow universities to charge whatever they want. I'm paying A LOT now, but if this had happened before I went to school, there's no way I would have gone since we don't have the cheaper option colleges (state schools?) like you guys do. Our versions of these schools charge the same as the top universities in the country!

Which Art Institute did you go to? I graduated from the Art Institute of Philadelphia almost 2 yrs ago in September. But the school is really expensive. I heard they were getting really tight with students loans toward the end of my college career but I graduated right before the stock market crashed in late September or early October of 08. My cousin(he majors in Media and Animation) who still goes to AiPH is having problems securing loans for his last two quarters. I hope you can finish out.

But to answer the OP's question I recently graduated and studied Industrial Design or it is also referred to as Product Design in the field. AiPH is very expensive. I will be paying it off for the next 2 decades.

Reading this makes me really appreciate that in Oklahoma, high school students who choose to concurrently enroll in college classes during their Junior and Senior years pay no tuition or books. So my daughter has 2 years out of the way already at 17, and it cost us nothing at all. Now I get to pay the next 2 years, but in-state tuition isn't bad at all and we have lots of post-secondary educational options here. She did get a scholarship though for going into a primarily male dominated field, which was a nice surprise. I'm just thankful we don't have to deal with the financial aid nightmares y'all describe.

SO LUCKY!!! Buying books suck, and selling them back sucks, because you get 25 dollars for a 120 dollar book. It's ridiculous.

Yes I remember that BA, it's a racket. I was really pleased that her scholarship covers all her books, supplies, and 25% of her tuition. You'd be surprised what just the books alone add up to. It's no wonder people end up paying student loans off for the next 20 years.

For real. Thing that adds to the suckage is that in some classes, you might barely use the book. I took a Geography class, paid 125 for the book, only to find out the teacher had the book online in PDF format for free.

Well you'd think that's something they might have listed in the syllabus? My biggest gripe was that I hated used books, I'm a book snob, I don't like having books that are written in, doodled on, torn, etc. But it just makes no sense to buy them new when you get only a fraction of the cost back when you turn them in.
