GLAAD slams "The View" for their comments regarding HIV/black men

GLAAD is not pleased with "The View."

Together with the National Black Justice Coalition and the Black AIDS Institute, the gay media watchdog group has taken out a full page ad in Variety magazine slamming "The View" for comments made during its June 22 episode.

During a discussion about the FDA ban on blood donation by gay and bisexual men, "View" co-host Sherri Sheperd and guest host D.L. Hughley said that secretly gay African American men are to blame for increased HIV rates among straight African American women.

"When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African American community, it's primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low," Hughley said.

Shepherd added, "It's so big in the black community with women because they're having sex with men who have been having sex with men."
But as GLAAD wrote in the Variety ad, "The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has publicly disproven this myth."

"We have looked to see what proportion of infections [among African American women] is coming from male partners who are bisexual and found there are actually relatively few," said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, in an interview with NNPA News Service. "More are male partners who are having female partners and are injecting drugs or using drugs or have some other risks that may put those female partners at risk of acquiring HIV."

In the Variety ad, GLAAD wrote that ABC producers have failed to correct their error.

Two days after the controversial episode aired, GLAAD issued a "Call to Action," urging its supporters to contact "The View" demanding an on-air apology for their June 22 misinformation. An apology has yet to be issued.

"Since June 22, thousands of people have written to ABC, asking that The View provide correct information to viewers," GLAAD wrote. "Unfortunately, those requests have been greeted with silence from both ABC and 'The View.'"

"When 'The View' talks about these kinds of issues, people listen," the ad continues. "And there's a responsibility that comes with that."

"View" co-hosts Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg have all received GLAAD Media Awards in the past.

DJ Hughley is a jackass for saying crap like that and I already know that the Sherri Shepherd woman has been overly critical of black men in the past (she was on this Dateline special where she lampooned black men for like an hour)

Anyways, very glad GLAAD is calling them out on their BS

Book written by Black gay men are very popular in Black female circles. Black men get HIV from drugs,sex with men,or both. Plus if a brother does not tell his partner of a rape he experienced in prison he may get HIV.
