And yet some hospitals have such a restrictive c-section policy that it endangers the lives of both mother and child. There may be some c-sections that aren't necessary, but you have to realize that a vaginal delivery isn't possible for all women. They generally have you try vaginally first, but at the point you fail to progress, or fetal distress occurs, a c-section is the next step. No woman in her right mind would opt for a c-section over a vaginal delivery if it was unnecessary. They're painful, far worse than vaginal delivery, and they take a lot longer to heal.

The insurance companies are against it as well!

Well yeah, it's a heck of a lot more expensive and requires a longer hospital stay. As I recall when I had my daughter, a vaginal delivery ran about $5,000.00 and my c-section ran about $20,000.00. So I can see why insurance companies are against them. However, there are just some people who need a c-section, and that isn't something the insurance companies should have a say in.

By contrast, in this city a lot of doctors prescribe c-sections for Women who don't need them. It's a greater benefit to them financially, and makes their lives more convenient.

And, sadly, I do actually have a friend that insisted on a c-section even tho she could have had a vaginal birth. I'd agree that she's not in her right mind, because that shit was crazy. She's amazing in all other ways, but on that she was adamant. The c-section meant she could schedule the baby's birth, which made her feel more in control of the whole thing.

Some doctors will let you schedule an inducement, they give you pit and you don't have to do the c-section, though I hear the labor involves more pain that way.

I can't imagine them scheduling c-sections for convenience, and I can't imagine anyone wanting one Chi. Hell I didn't want an episiotomy, I wanted completely natural child birth, but ended up about as far from that as I could get. The hospital I was at wouldn't do a c-section unless their was evidence of fetal distress, or the mother's life was in danger. So despite having already been told there was no way I could deliver a baby over 6 pounds, and the fact that my water broke 7 times in the 2 weeks prior to her delivery, they wouldn't do a c-section. My OB even flat out told me that I needed one, and that it was dangerous to allow me to go into labor, but his hands were tied. Now I lived in BFE Kansas at the time, and had to drive 2 hours to get to that shitty hospital, so there were no other options. Fortunately I ended up almost bleeding to death, which apparently met the criteria for a c-section, but they let it get to that point before they got serious about it. Thanks to them my daughter spent over a month in the newborn ICU, which could have been avoided had they simply done the c-section the first time my water broke and I failed to dilate. Needless to say no one argued about pre-scheduling my son's c-section, though I did change OBs and hospitals.

I still remember though that it literally felt like someone ripped me in half when I tried to hop out of bed a couple hours after my daughter was delivered. That was a rude awakening! So someone scheduling one on purpose for no reason other than convenience is just insane to me.

Good lord. The fact that in this day and age we still have so much bureaucratic nonsense bullshit getting between mothers and the best possible options for delivery is asinine. I don't know what's so hard about saying that whatever the doctor & mother consider the best option is what should happen. Here I've heard about mothers being bullied into c-sections, and now I'm hearing about them being denied them when they need them.

It's terrible. Mothers are in enough stress at that time, they don't need red tape and ridiculous rules.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that, Espy.

It was an eye opening experience Chi. But you know what really pissed me off? After my daughter came home I requested a tubal ligation (tubes tied) so I couldn't have more children, especially since they gave me 50/50 odds of having the same difficulties in any subsequent pregnancies. The doctor refused stating and I quote, "no you're young and you're just still over emotional due to the difficult delivery you experienced so you'll likely change your mind, and even if you don't change your mind, your husband will want to try for a boy." I'm not sure I've ever been that pissed at someone, but then it might have just been my overly emotional state at the time.

Of course then when I saw the doctor after finding out I was unexpectedly pregnant with my son, she bitched at me for being so selfish and attempting to have another child considering how high the risks were, and demanded I have an abortion. I'm thinking man you just can't please everyone. After my son was delivered, I again requested the tubal, but my husband had to agree to that or I couldn't have it. I'm sorry but that's horseshit. A woman does not have to consent to her husband's vasectomy, but a wife has to have her husband's consent to get her tubes tied. That is a massively unfair double standard right there. Okay, done fuming now, sorry that still really pisses me off!

Is when I read all this crap that I'm so glad to be born and raised in Italy. Giving birth to a child is free and you don't need no insurance for that. Magics of the welfare-state systems. :D

Yes I imagine that is nice TS. I had insurance and so only paid a fraction of the cost of both deliveries, but the cost of surgery and hospital stays are just astounding sometimes.

Who's assuming C-sections aren't needed? I have watched the movie before, it was on Showtime about 4-5 months ago. It just voices concern over how many C-sections American Women have as compared to other countries.

Since we have a higher infant morality rate than other industrialized nations, I too which question what hospitals do because not only do they heal the sick, they are profit centers. Also just how much are midwives and natural home birth are mentioned to people?

I hate trying to be informative to people because this is likely not Blacktiger's last child and for anybody in this thread considering having children inside our broken health care system should consider ALL OPTIONS and be INFORMED.

This is where I should mention as in the movie and I agree that surgery has become so pervasive (common place) that many women don't mind going under the knife for various reasons?

How old are you again Espy? There plenty of women that have had boob job, liposuction, collagen injections and have scheduled C-sections for child birth, for them a little pain involved is not an issue and the scar is nothing a talented plastic surgeon can't fix.

I kinda hate to be cynical but I live in Los Angeles, this happens on a daily.
