Our local pro soccer team had some cheerleaders for a while. People hated them and complained. Also, they had several mascots and one used to pester people and they got rid of his ass too along with the cheerleaders. He was annoying......he would come and say things to you and be in the way of watching the game with his costume. He picked on me one night even though I wouldn't look at him.

Is anybody going to Joberg to watch the games? I wish the cup was next June, I would have take my blk ass and act like a typical soccer hooligan in South africa.

That would be fun to go this year. You could sign the petition instead to bring WC to the US .........the petition is online.

Sounds like a bad marketing or presentation plan.

Nah, we don't need a half time show or cheerleaders.
The thing is, football is about the sport. Football as a sport and the passion that comes with it is entertainment enough. Nobody in football games is really arsed about cheerleaders, and we don't want a half time show because we just want to get back to the game!
American-ising it would really ruin football. American football shows are fantastic, don't get me wrong, but I think all the faffing overshadows the actual sport. So many people look forward to half time shows and the adverts, rather than the game itself. We don't want that tainting our football!

Russia that is why the pro team here got rid of them. People said get them out of the way they are stupid and interefere with the game. The commentaries were bad about not wanting them. They did get rid of them though, to their credit.

That's good, I'm glad! More respect to your team. Football isn't about those sort of spectacles.

Whoops! Sorry robina and tarsh, my bad.
Russia, first of all, I recognize you as probably the biggest football fan/afficionado/expert on WWBM. I hear what you and Jordan are saying, but you have to admit that football (soccer) is just as commercialized as American football, just in a different way. Player salaries/endorsements and daily front page stories about WAGs indicate this, at least. It really is a cultural difference that we enjoy halftime and cheerleaders in AF. Of course the cheerleaders add zero to the game itself but the halftime show at the Super Bowl, for example has become a premier cultural phenomena in and of itself (we even had Macca here!).

The situation in Colorado shows that at least some Americans have the international approach to the game (and I'm sure serious fans like Jordan in other US soccer towns feel similarly), but when it comes to America in general, professional soccer has never caught on to the extent of other major pro sports like American football, baseball or basketball.

Having said that, I know there is a real buzz in the US everytime the World Cup comes around, and this year we are especially excited because the US made it to the big dance.
