I just wanted to remind everyone why we all joined this site because Loving Day is right around the corner. For those of you who might not know Loving Day is a yearly celebration honoring the first American couple to be joined in interracial marriage. The Loves were a real couple who tried to get married in the late 50s and their union was rejected because marriage between blacks and whites were illegal then. Through their arduous tribulations they fought the Supreme Court to make unions between blacks and whites legally recognized so if you're in the NY area or know of a festival near you please go out and show your support. If it wasn't for their sacrafices we wouldn't be together.

It's celebrated either on the 12th or the day after. This year it's on the 13th in NY

Wow, I didn't know there was a day to honor them. That's awesome!

Unbelievable to think that someone could actually be convicted for such a thing, but it happened and not so long ago. A great excerpt from the decision:

As cheesy as it sounds it's kind of cool that their actual names were love. Kind of sweetly ironic.

What's also ironic is this was a WM/BW couple that took IR marriage to the Supreme Court level at a time in history when black men were still getting lynched. Angry sistas need to take notes.

We usually barbecue on Loving Day.

One good thing to do is to tell everyone about it. If you bbq, you can let your whole circle know about Loving Day. Be sure to let everyone you know in an IR that this is *our* day. Be sure to invite everyone else, too, so that more people know about Loving Day -- generally people love it, everyone loves an excuse for another holiday, particularly one this romantic, particularly if there's bbq involved. And finally, be sure to invite any singles you know who are interested in dating IR -- like weddings, Loving Day's a great time to met someone, because everyone's in the mood. Of course, be sure not to invite haters. Or, if you have to invite them, lay the IR frosting on thick so they don't want to come.

Oh, also, you can really have fun with the food at a Loving Day BBQ.

You can do "fusion" menus, that include the tastiest bbq food from different ethnicities.

Alternately, you can do a Hawaiian themed BBQ in honor of Obama -- also, there's a huge amount of IR marriage in Hawaii, more than anywhere else in the nation, so it's a good theme by itself anyway.

Our local newspaper is writing an article on mixed race couples' stories to commemorate Loving Day - my husband and I are one of the couples they are writing on. ;) Once it's published, I'll have to post the link. Also, a facebook group that I'm a member of (and know the lady who runs it) is having a BBQ - it will be fun. Can't wait! The group is called "Mixed and Happy: I Support Mixed-Race Families" - if any of you are on facebook, check it out. It's great! http://www.facebook.com/mixedandhappy

What an ass. It's pathetic that anyone would think it appropriate to say something like that outloud. :smt018
