Contrary to popular belief, there are some people that have medical issues that prevent them from losing weight, as does some medications.

Not every person who is overweight, is overweight because they're lazy or weak-willed.

Did I say half of the population? Nope.

It's not just genetic disorders, but certain medications make people gain weight, too.

It doesn't account for a majority of the people, but probably more of them than even YOU realize.

I am not saying your lying bookworm, but lets me honest here...you do think that over half of America has this so-called disorder??? Ummm no. A lot of it has to do with lack of motivation and bad dieting.

These "medical issues" that prevent folks to lose weight is VERY rare.

I've never been on them, but I know some anti-depressants can make people gain weight. Sure it's not 100 pounds, but if they're already overweight, taking something like anti-depressants would make it that much more difficult for an overweight person to lose weight.

Look, I'm not saying that explains most or even half, but shit, not everyone is lazy.

As it is, too many families and people nowadays eat out instead of making their own food and the portion sizes in restaurants are astronomically out of control, which doesn't help the weight problem in this country.

I absolutely agree with this. So it is their own fault. They need to learn how to discipline themselves and not always give into their cravings.

It's not about giving into their cravings. It's about being taught what a proper portion size really is and sticking to that. A trick I learned doing Weight Watchers was, when you order an entree at a restaurant, when they bring it to you, ask for a take home box and immediately put half of your meal into the take home container. What's left will probably still be more than what a portion size should be, but it'll be a heck of a lot closer than eating the entire entree in one sitting.

Also, a lot of fast food restaurants have gone crazy with their cup sizes. What used to be a large is now a medium in some places.

People need to be educated on proper portion sizes.

Ugh, I hate the skinnier-than-thou. More often than not, it's someone of mediocre weight, who lost that nagging 20 pounds and is now about as fun as the guy who just quit smoking.

Being skinny is not a character reference. People who discuss why "half the population" (bullshit) is so overweight love to focus upon what it is about the heavies that makes them fat. As if everyone's experience is the same.

    It's not.

I can eat pure-d crap for days without gaining weight. I'm all into the healthy thing these days, but I still eat crap when I want, and it has a completely different impact on my body than it does on heavier people's bodies. I know people who have been obese in the past, and they can't *ever* eat certain things, that I can eat without thinking about it. In part this is because I'm tall. If I were under 5 feet tall, and ate what I eat, I'd probably be apple-shaped.

Some people overeat because they are lazy and weak willed. Others overeat for completely different reasons.

But if you're taking time out of your life to judge someone's character based upon their weight, you should really be worrying about your own blatant character flaws.

Yep. Metabolism plays a huge role in how people gain/lose weight.

But it's like everyone else said, you can be skinny and still be completely unhealthy. Like those Lipitor commercials that show good-looking thin people and then show their cholesterol levels. You cannot judge a person by their appearance.

Yeah you can Book. Generally if I see an overweight person I know they're unhealthy and its usually the truth

I think it depends upon how you classify 'overweight'. To some people 20 extra pounds is overweight, for others it's 50 or a 100. Generally speaking from a medical standpoint, 100 pounds above ideal body weight is considered morbidly obese. From my experience in the cardiology practice where I worked for 8 years, patients classified as morbidly obese had other health issues related to obesity like high BP, high cholesterol, and diabetes. However, a good number of them also had genetic or other issues that predisposed them to be that much overweight, such as metabolic syndrome or endocrine system issues. We also saw quite a few patients who were thin and had the same medical problems due to genetics. So in that respect Bookie and Chi are right, you can't look at someone and determine whether they are healthy or not solely based upon their weight. However a larger proportion of obese people are going to have other medical issues that diminish their health than those that do not. I have no idea what percentage of the population would be classified unhealthy, but I do know you'll find thin and obese people in that category.

Why would you bother judging someone's health based on their appearance? I mean seriously, who cares? Why would that be at all relevant to you?

I can see caring about the health of someone you are already close to, but if you don't know them, why do you care how healthy they are?

For a multitude of reasons. I could be a concerned citizen who wants good things for my fellow man, I am concerned with the current healthcare crisis and want people to get preventive care in the form of education about obesity, or I can be like every other nosey fuck in this world trying to impose my views on others because I'm self righteous. Most things that others do don't concern us but we opinions are like assholes everyone has one.

The point I was trying to make Esp was that yeah there are unhealthy people who are skinny there's not denying that but I willing to bet my balls that you're averae overweight person is far more unhealthy.

Andrae... do you consider yourself unhealthy?

I honestly don't know that to be true, and I tend to not make statements I don't know I can backup with facts. I've seen plenty of thin people with serious health issues, but I can't say they outnumber the quantity of overweight people with health issues. About the only thing I can say is that thin people's health issues are less likely to be tied to their weight, whereas morbidly obese people's health issues are more likely to be caused by their weight. They call it morbidly obese for a reason after all. I also know from personal observation that losing weight can reverse things like high BP, type 2 diabetes, lower stroke risk, etc. That alone tells me that the human body is meant to function optimally within a certain weight range. However, I also believe that range isn't the same for everyone. If someone is 300 pounds, happy, and healthy, I don't see why anyone should have a problem with them. Frankly I don't care if they're 300 pounds, unhappy, and unhealthy, it's still none of my business. Ultimately it's their life to live as they choose. As Chi said, anyone who isn't someone who directly matters to me I leave alone and I don't make judgments about them. I don't judge the people who do matter to me, but I would take a more vocal interest in their health for obvious reasons.

He's yet to answer it, so maybe I hit a nerve.

I'm not trying to attack you, Andrae, not at all.. I'm just curious as you argue so strongly on the point.

nah, i seriously doubt you hit a nerve. he's a cool customer.
but i must say, i have thought this path you are going down now has a lot to do with how/why some guys have issues with fuller women. it's cause of how they see themselves on the inside and their issues within. (not to get all docta phil or nuthin. lol)

Lol for 29 no I don't consider myself to be as healthy as I can be but I'm getting there. I exercise four days a week two times each day. I hold a belt on both Oyama Karate and Judo as well as two years experience in krav maga but I'm not where I want to be.
You guys didn't strike a nerve I just missed the update on the post.
My issue with the concept of accepting overweight people is IMO just another long list of bs political correctness that we let get out of hand. If I had more time I would seriously look up emperical data to support my statements but for me it's simple deductive reasoning. For example take France, one of the healthiest countries in the industrialized world, most of their citizens are weight proportionate and lead active lifestyles. We are entirely too seditary and eat far more than we need to in this country. The obesity problem is a tell tale sign symptom of this epidemic and it's annoying when people make it seem as though it's not a problem. It's a fallacy to pretend that if someone is 25 lbs overweight they're just built differently. The BMI gives a sliding scale and if you don't fall in between that you are more likely to develop health problems associated with being overweight. Yes there are thinner people whose health problems aren't as noticeable but let's be honest being overweight cause your system to work harder than it was intended to like a family of five riding around in small compact car. Eventually the car will experience wear and tear far quicker than intended because it was meant for only three people. I just don't understand the disconnect. Look around the industrialized world, people in the US are fatter and as a result our populus has a higher rate of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases associated with being fat.
