Reasons race relations are improving are as follows:
    whites are increasingly attending HBCUs

    IR are on the rise

    IR friendships are increasing

    whites adopting outside their race

Reasons to believe race relations have a long way to go :

    Rand Paul cant shut up

    Rush limbaugh

    Mike savage

Darn it radio talk show hosts

    latinos are the new black

what can you add to the list

Race relations are improving?? NO !!

I'm sorry but even though we have a black president, its all "window dressing". When it really counts, racism is as deep as it ever was.

For example, in 1984, the economic difference between an upper class black family and an upper class white family was $20,000. Since that time, blacks have gotten an education, they've moved up in corporate america and got well paying jobs, etc., etc.

Yet, fast forward 25 years and the economic difference between those two families is now $95,000. With the wealth of the black family pretty much staying the same and the wealth of the white family blows up exponentially.

Many experts contribute that difference to the persistent racism in this country. NOT because blacks haven't tried. Remember, they were comparing upper class black and white families with the same ambition and education values.

I don't believe that racism is as deep as it ever was. I believe we are gradually moving forward. We are definitely not there yet, I don't believe we are 'post racial' or anything like that. But I talk to my Mom about what the world was like 50 years ago, and I definitely think things have improved. There are fewer racists in the world today, and those that are around have less power. We are better today than yesterday, but we must work hard to get to tomorrow.

If you read about this country BEFORE the Civil War of the 1860's, there were northern cities like Philadelphia that was like what you are seeing now. There were many mixed children from both sides of the relationship bm/ww and wm/bw. That was the problem, many poor whites from the south thought the black man was doing better than they were.

Some of your historically black colleges were started by ww to help educate the bw. There were two white women from England who started Spelman College in the basement of a church.

Benjammin Banneker's mother was a white woman from England. She purchased her husband, set him free then married him. When they had a son, she made sure he had the best education possible at that time overseas. He was the one who layed the foundation for the nation's capital, Washington D.C.

AFTER the Civil War, they even had affirmative action in the south to help pull blacks up from slavery from 1865 to about 1876. It was around this time that the south started pushing their political clout. That plus with this country having to deal with the indian situation with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This was during the time when General Custer's entire regiment was wiped out by the Indians. It was 250 american soilders vs. 3,000 Indians. A straight up massacre. Thats when this country turned their attention to the Indian problem and what to do about it. The slavery issue took a back seat.

Come 1897 was the infamous Plessy vs. Fergusson supreme court case which made "seperate but equal" the law of the land. That bought about the Jim Crow era.

Around 50 years ago, near 1960 the time your mother is talking about, was the beginning of the end of Jim Crow. This was when the civil rights movement was at its peak. Blacks were standing up to the old status quo and it was very brutal to say the least. This was also the time of the black power movement led by the Black Panther Party.

The civil rights movement was all about NON-VIOLENCE with Matin Luther King. The Black Panthers were for VIOLENCE headed by Huey P. Newton. The civil rights marchers would march with their arms lock together CHANTING for equality. The Black Panthers would march with shotguns in their hands DEMANDING equality. Then you had J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI, who hated BOTH sides, the civil rights marchers and the Black Panthers. He was doing everything he could to bust up BOTH organizations.

If your mom is refering to those times, then hell-double- yeah :smt107 the race relations in this country was at its worst ever. But long before then it wasn't.

I love your outlook Chi. It's always so positive.

I guess for me, I keep seeing, hearing, reading about a lot of racial stuff more so than I remember. I think the President sparked a lot of dialog, but then again, maybe a lot of people are just more in tune with it and talking about it more and I just happened to notice now.

Both lists need work. When Don Imus, Glen Beck, or Howard Stern adopts a black child then we might be making progress...

I wouldn't want to subject Black babies or any baby for that matter - to any of those idiots.
