Well, as Epsy mentioned, a lot of the stuff is applicable even today. Just about everything that we do and say now has already been done/said. I'm sure you'd enjoy it.
I agree. It surprises me to read something written in the 1600s and find it spot on for today. He was ahead of his time.
True. I think he was perfectly balanced. I like Machiavelli's philosophies but some of them are so malevolent that they're sure to come back to bite you in the end. And others who wrote 'mirrors-for-princes' before Machiavelli were simply too preachy for my liking. Gracian has a harmlessly secular style, which often got him in a lot of trouble.
As far as political philosphers go I'm more into Rousseau I think he had a more realsitic view of power and government. More of an optimistic version of Hobbs with a realistic Lockean view.
An associate of mine introduced me to Rousseau a few years ago. I haven't read anything by him or Thomas Hobbes as of yet though. I have a bad habit of buying more books before I finish the ones I already have.
I forgot to add that I'm a cynic. PS: The flash makes me look too light. I'm at least Denzel Washington's complexion.
I could tell by your posts, but that's okay...lol We're not big on complexions around here, just be cute and cool and you're good!
Yeah, I first read it back in 2008. I loved it mainly for the references though. His books are good but they'd be more enjoyable if they weren't so repetitive. Richard Stengel's book 'You're Too Kind: A Brief History of Flattery' is great. You'll laugh, learn, and think while reading it.
I just saw this - how did i miss it?? Anyway, yeah...couch definitely works...but we have like an awesome headboard that I can hang on to if need be - giiirrrrrrl, i could spend hours up there just ridin' away, LOL. armless chairs work really well too - the floor makes for really good support if need be...we broke one once...it was a cheap chair obviously, LOL.
You ride 'em Chica! Right off into the sunset...lol Sounds like you have a new post for your blog. The "Secrets of Riding"...LOL
There actually was a chick at my high school who had an eye patch. I think it gave her character, like Elle Driver in Kill Bill.
