what is that? (i tried looking it up real quick but seemed all they were doing was comparing dysphoria vs dysphormia)
What's crazy is he's in sports where race doesn't matter anymore its all about ability. It seems to be the one realm where your merrit counts far more than the way you look.
yea, that is pretty much totally not true. lol a great example is the magic/bird documentary that is airing on hbo. it is a great example of race in sports. 2 men at the top of the same sport and how race played into perception on and off the court. even in the sosa example, look at all the hype mcgwire got that year that they were both chasing the record. sosa was just the flavor flav to the main event, as the media played it.
I was merely citing "imitators as blacks"....?? But I feel this is one of the many reasons why some want to stick with Spanish, if they lose the language than they're just......
I'm not saying the media is fair but these are guys who are picked based on talent. If owners could have all white teams again I'm sure they would but then they'd lose a lot of games to teams who picked based on talent. No one let jackie robinson play because they were trying to pc he was just the best player at the time.
Sorry folks, I'm bumping up this thread because... Sorry for bumping this thread, but while wading into the Haiti/DR debate online, I found a very balanced discussion of the issue from a black Dominican on Afro-Latino (particularly Dominicans, but applicable generally, including among people in the 'West Indies') consciousness. I don't agree 100% (maybe 95%), but it's cogent, pro-African and in layman's language, which will help anyone who doesn't feel like wading into someone's PhD thesis in history and cultural anthropology. Has that athelete read about how Black slavery spread across North and South America as well as the Caribbean? When some of the indigenous population died out Spain brought the Africans to replace them.
The entire island of Hispanola is Nubian. I wonder why some of those Dominicans think how they get their kinky hair?
If you go all the way to the end of the video, he does acknowledge that. He even gets on the topic of "good hair, bad hair" and all of the kids he asks what color they are in the video each says unequivocally that they are of the black race. He also talked about immigrants saying that they're not black, as being more about saying they're not American than it was about denying African blood/genes. Not perfect by any stretch, but it was a decent treatment of the topic for a layman.
Man,when they say they ain't Black they are dead serious. I've met people from the Latin word that are Blacker than John Lee Hooker with hair like a buffalo, that will tell you with a straight face, that, they are not Black but Spanish and Taino indian. They disassociate themselves from Black people because of self hatred....and especially to seek acceptance from Whites. They suck ass like it is an Olympic sport.
I have noticed something intersting in my travels though. The more the women in a given area are into black men, THE "BLACKER" THE MEN IN THAT AREA BECOME. I'm referring to stereotypical dress/style/behavior. A lot of this depends on the percieved benefit of being black in a given situation. In a situation where there is a perception that BM are favored, like a college bar frequented by the athletes for instance, suddenly these same dudes who were Latin all day, are all in fitted yankee caps and their speech becomes inundated with heavily accented ebonics. And every black guy in the club is their "brotha". lol I've seen a few different types of dudes (Middle eastern, Indian etc.) shave their hair down to a caesar cut and turn up the "black" in an effort to blend in with the BM and increase their chances of a hook up.
When I was a kid we called it the 'Quo Vadis', lol. If hip hop music and stereotypes are what the women want, every dude starts getting stereotypical, even the Korean kids. Pretty soon everyone's wearing Timberlands and flashy clothing and you can't tell the players without a scorecard. That's why I don't say 'black' I say 'African' when asking that question. In many languages around the world, the English word 'black' means 'African-American'. In Brazil, African-American music is called 'Musica Black/Blac/Blaque'. In the video, when he asks every kid what "color" they are, instead of "what are you?", they all answer "black" in color as opposed to "black American".
